How much is Blackpool’s promotion to the Championship worth to the Seasiders?

After a six-year absence, Blackpool will line up in the Championship next season.

Neil Critchley’s men sealed their return to the second tier of English football on Sunday with a 2-1 win over Lincoln City in the League One play-off final.

Kenny Dougall was Pool's unlikely hero with both goals, helping the Seasiders recover from a horror start where they conceded after just 48 seconds courtesy of a freak Ollie Turton own goal.

It was Blackpool’s sixth victory in a play-off final in the club’s history, confirming their status as the country’s play-off kings.

Rising up to the Championship means Blackpool’s ‘guaranteed income’ will now increase - and by some margin, too.

Reaching the second tier will see the club's Premiership Solidarity payments, which are distributed to all EFL clubs from the top flight, rise from £675,000 per year to £4.5m.

The split between EFL teams is 80 per cent to clubs in the Championship, 12 per cent to clubs in League One and eight per cent to clubs in League Two.

This figure will also be boosted by a rise in the broadcast and commercial contracts, with an uplift of £891,000 for a League One club to £2.99m for a Championship club.

That means that Blackpool will pocket around £7.5m for plying their trade in the Championship, as opposed to £1.5m in League One.

The Seasiders will also benefit from the larger away followings as well as the commercial and sponsorship opportunities that will arise from playing in the Championship.

It must be noted, however, that the overall ‘guaranteed income’ figure could be slightly lower this coming year due to the rebate agreed by Premier League clubs, which came as a result of the crippling financial impact of the pandemic.

Wages also sky-rocket in the second tier, with clubs splashing the cash in a bid to reach the ‘glory land’ of the Premier League.

EFL: PFA will consider legal action over squad size limit proposals
Last updated on 8 April 2021

The Professional Footballers' Association has said it will have to consider legal action if the English Football League does not scrap its proposed limits on squad sizes.

Under the proposals, teams in the Championship will be able to name a 25-man squad while those in Leagues One and Two will be restricted to 20.

The PFA wants teams at all three levels to be allowed to name 25-man squads.

The union said that suggestion has been rejected by the EFL.

In an open letter to EFL clubs and players, the PFA said that limiting squad sizes in Leagues One and Two would "increase the risk of injury to players" because of the demands of a 46-match season.

And it said clubs relegated from the Championship would "be forced to honour multi-year contracts to players who are no longer able to play due to reduced squad sizes".

In February, the EFL's plans for salary caps in Leagues One and Two were withdrawn following a decision by an independent arbitration panel after a successful claim by the PFA that they were "unlawful and unenforceable".

Under the proposals, third tier clubs would have been given a £2.5m ceiling for salaries and fourth tier sides £1.25m.

The PFA said that unless a solution was found to the limits on squad sizes it must consider beginning another arbitration claim or legal action.

"We believe there exists a majority of clubs in the EFL that would prefer to have stability and certainty for next season instead of suffering the inevitable uncertainty that another challenge through arbitration or the courts brings," the letter said.

"This would cause a further needless waste of legal costs, money that ultimately the clubs themselves have to pay if the EFL is again unsuccessful."

If they get relegated, they're the next crisis club

Huddersfield Town: Former owner Dean Hoyle agrees repayment restructure

Former Huddersfield owner Dean Hoyle has agreed to restructure the repayment of £34m he is owed by the club to help it through the coronavirus pandemic.

The Terriers reported a £8.2m pre-tax loss for the financial year to 30 June 2020, which covered their first year back in the Championship following relegation from the Premier League.

Lifelong fan Hoyle had been owed £45m after his sale to businessman Phil Hodgkinson in May 2019.

That debt has now been reduced to £34m.

However, rather than having to pay all but £10m by 31 August 2022 as initially intended, the club's latest accounts confirm this date has now been extended to 28 February 2025.

The first of four payments leading to the 2025 date is for £4m and is due on 28 February 2022.

It is understood the loans are interest free.

The final £10m will be repayable in two parts "on certain trigger events occurring".

Hoyle remains a director of the club, in which he retains a 25% stake.

I hope the club continues to build for a strong future without unrealistic expectations. There are many clubs that have attempted to reach for the premiership but have found their next step to be fighting to avoid oblivion.

Good stewardship is now the most important element to a successful Blackpool future. Our recent history is a prime example of this.

Wycombe owner accuses Derby of 'systematic cheating'

Wycombe owner Rob Couhig has accused Derby of "systematic cheating" and has threatened to sue the Pride Park outfit for millions of pounds if his club are denied a place in the Championship because of the timing of a disciplinary appeal.

The English Football League released "interchangeable fixtures" for Derby and Wycombe on Thursday amid an ongoing Financial Fair Play case against the Rams.

Derby were fined £100,000 and ordered to resubmit their accounts by an EFL disciplinary commission.

That came after an independent arbitration panel decided the club had not followed standard accountancy rules in making their original submissions.

The EFL has the option to appeal against the punishment and may call for a points deduction - which could see the Rams relegated from the Championship.

Wycombe were relegated on the final day of last season, finishing one point behind Derby.

A Derby statement on Thursday said the club disputed that a points deduction would be an appropriate or lawful punishment to be imposed retrospectively, "altering the final league placings after the season has already finished".

But Couhig feels Derby deserve to be punished further.

"It is beyond disappointing that a club can systemically cheat and end up with a slap on the wrist," he said. "You have years upon years of violating the rules.

"I don't want to sound bitter about it. It is not over yet, obviously. But it just doesn't make any sense.

"A £100,000 fine is what you would expect to receive if it was merely a technical [breach].

"In this case it was way beyond technical. That is what the appellant panel said."

The Rams were cleared of breaching Financial Fair Play rules last year.

However, the EFL appealed against the decision to an independent tribunal and won the element of the case concerning how the club measured the value of players - called amortisation.

On Wednesday, the EFL said Derby had been fined and also issued with a reprimand as to their future conduct.

The club have also been ordered to file restated accounts for financial years ending 30 June 2016, 2017 and 2018 "together with updated profit and sustainability calculations if necessary", the EFL said.

BBC Sport has been told any further breaches will be dealt with through further charges.

BBC Sport has been told the EFL produced an interchangeable fixture list to allow for the entire case to run its course. Although, in accepting there is no timescale, the EFL has left open the potential for it to run beyond 7 August, when the domestic season is due to begin.

That could mean Wycombe starting life in League One before the final outcome of the case is known.

"If we don't get a decision until after we have started and we were forced to play in League One, my suspicion would be Derby would owe Wycombe for the losses we would sustain for not playing in the Championship in 2021-22 and any reasonably projected economic losses," Couhig said.

"So we are looking in the region of £10m-£15m of potential losses for a Derby club which, the last time I looked, is having some trouble paying its creditors.

"We would have an obligation to look into [suing them]. If it was the best thing for the club, yes, that is what we would do."

Jonathan Woodgate: Bournemouth interim boss to leave at end of June

Bournemouth boss Jonathan Woodgate is to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the month.

The 41-year-old was placed in interim charge in February after Jason Tindall was sacked.

He led the Cherries to the Championship play-offs, but they were beaten by Brentford in the semi-final.

"Jonathan is a man of real integrity, whose passion for the game shines through," chief executive Neil Blake told the club website.

Fulham boss Scott Parker is reportedly expected to take over at the south coast side at the start of next week.

Woodgate was initially brought in as Tindall's first team coach on 1 February before being placed in caretaker charge when Tindall was sacked two days later.

On 21 February the Cherries announced he would remain at the helm until the end of the season after winning three of his first five games.

In total, the former Middlesbrough boss won 13 of his 24 games as Bournemouth finished sixth in the table.

They beat the Bees 1-0 in the first leg of their Championship play-off semi-final, but a 3-1 defeat in the away leg consigned them to a second successive season in the second tier.

Derby County to play in Championship after EFL decide not to appeal against fine

Derby will play in the Championship next season after the English Football League decided not to appeal against a decision to just fine the club for their accounting policies.

The Rams were fined £100,000 and ordered to resubmit their accounts by an EFL disciplinary commission.

The EFL could have appealed against the verdict and demanded a points deduction - which would have brought relegation.

But the EFL believed it had no realistic chance of winning any appeal.

A statement read: "While the EFL does not agree that those sanctions are commensurate to the breaches found, following consultation with our legal advisors, the EFL Board has regrettably determined that there are insufficient grounds to appeal the sanction imposed by the Independent Disciplinary Commission."

The EFL had developed an interchangeable fixture list for next season for Derby and Wycombe Wanderers - who had finished one point behind the Rams - while the process was finalised.

Derby were cleared of breaching Financial Fair Play rules last year.

However, the EFL appealed against the decision to an independent tribunal and won the element of the case concerning how the club measured the value of players - called amortisation.

The Rams' £100,000 fine came after that arbitration panel decided the club had not followed standard accountancy rules in making their original submissions.

Wycombe owner Rob Couhig subsequently accused Derby of "systematic cheating" and said the Rams should be punished further for "years upon years of violating the rules".

Analysis
BBC Sport's Simon Stone

The crux of this exceptionally complicated case was whether Derby deliberately attempted to gain an advantage by changing the method of accounting for players in their financial accounts - usually done by reducing the value of each player in equal amounts across the full length of their contract - and then attempted to conceal what they had done by failing to notify the EFL quickly enough.

The EFL felt they did and pushed for a points deduction.

Derby argued their case and the panel sided with them, deciding it would be "wholly disproportionate" to impose a points deduction and, also in the written reasons, saying they "could not safely conclude" the club gained an advantage anyway.

The conclusion gave the EFL no wriggle room for an appeal, which had been expected, because it became impossible to argue the panel had made a mistake given the depth of their 52-page summation of the hearing.

It leaves the EFL frustrated and Derby at least able to move on from one of their issues, that has hung over them for 18 months.

However, it is fair to assume a rule change is coming that will prevent any other club going down the same path as Derby, who must resubmit their accounts for 2016, 2017 and 2018 in the 'normal' way by 18 August, knowing they will be charged if they breach profit and sustainability rules again.

However, any decision on that and any subsequent case will have no effect on the start of the 2021-22 season. Derby will play in the Championship and Wycombe in League One.

The Rams should also be able to finally submit subsequent accounts, which have been delayed due to the outcome of this case.

I don't understand why the Venkeys get criticised by the Blackburn fans.

They're owners who go above and beyond anything that could be expected.

Perhaps Blackburn'd do better if the fans stopped being selfish and pulled in the same direction as the owners.
