Preview: Millwall (H)

Blackpool welcome Millwall on Saturday in the Seasiders first Championship fixture for three weeks.

Blackpool haven't been in league action since the New Years Day victory over Hull City, and come into Saturday's fixture looking to make it back-to-back league victories after last week's match at Barnsley was postponed.

Millwall, meanwhile, haven't tasted victory since late December and are on a run of three straight defeats in all competitions, suffering narrow losses to Bristol City, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest since the New Year.

In what has been a mixed season of results for both Blackpool and Millwall, both sides sit on 33 points in mid-table heading into Saturday, with Millwall having a game in hand.

The Manager: Gary Rowett
Gary Rowett joined Millwall in October 2019, succeeding Club legend Neil Harris who left his position after four years in charge at the Den. Since joining the Lions, Rowett has guided the Club to an eighth and 11th placed finish in the Sky Bet Championship, with the Club looking to make that step up to the Premier League. As well as Millwall, Rowett has managed at Burton Albion, Birmingham City, Derby County and Stoke City. He enjoyed a successful playing career too having represented the likes of Derby County, Leicester City and Burton Albion, as well as a short loan spell at Blackpool in 1995.

The Key Man: Tom Bradshaw
Despite failing to find the back of the net in his opening five Championship fixture this season, Tom Bradshaw has seven goals to his name heading into Saturday’s fixture. A brace against Stoke in October was followed up with goals in five consecutive fixtures in November and December. Bradshaw also counts Shrewsbury Town, Walsall and Barnsley on his list of former Clubs.

Our Last Three Meetings:
- 28/08/21 — Millwall 2 Blackpool 1
- 05/03/16 — Millwall 3 Blackpool 0
- 20/10/15 — Blackpool 1 Millwall 1

Who Comes Out On Top?
Saturday's fixture will be the 50th meeting between Blackpool and Millwall, with both sides having won 16 previous meetings each. There have been 17 draws between the two sides.

Sponsors:
The Club would like to thank Saturday's Match Sponsors Leslie, and ball sponsors Lookers Volkswagen Blackpool for their continued support.

The Referee: David Webb
Saturday will be David Webb's third Blackpool match of the season. He officiated the victory at Middlesbrough and the home game with Peterborough so far this season.

Match Programme:
Saturday's edition of the match day programme includes the usual notes from Neil Critchley and Chris Maxwell, an interview with Owen Dale, plus Top Fives with Dan Grimshaw.

You can purchase a copy of the match day programme both online and in-store.

A trip to the seaside...

Millwall travel to Blackpool in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 3pm).

The Lions head for Bloomfield Road looking to get back on the right track following last Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, in a first trip to FY1 since October 2015.

Gary Rowett, however, will be without key players for the fixture. Tom Bradshaw and Sheyi Ojo sustained long-term injuries in last weekend's loss, and they now join Jed Wallace and Alex Pearce on the sidelines. George Saville's fitness, meanwhile, will be assessed before kick-off, with Tyler Burey and Ben Thompson, who both featured on the bench against The Tricky Trees, in the manager's thoughts.

Around 900 fans will make the trip to Blackpool, but if you aren't one of them, then full match commentary will be available on iFollow Millwall with an Audio Match Pass. International subscribers will be able to watch the action from Bloomfield Road. Click here for more details.

Championship preview: Blackpool vs. Millwall — Lions quickly need wins to avoid ‘transition’ feeling

IF Millwall fall any further off the play-off places then this season is in danger of entering ‘transition’ territory.

But a transition to what is the big question.

The Lions were promoted to the Championship in 2017 and in the four full seasons since they have flirted with the top six late into three of them.

It’s the next step that’s the big one, actually getting there.

It’s about how do they do it.

Last Saturday’s opponents, Nottingham Forest, acted decisively early in this transfer window. Buoyed by their run since Steve Cooper took charge — when the team were bottom of the league — they signed striker Keinan Davis on loan from Aston Villa and defender Steve Cook from AFC Bournemouth. They are big statements in this division. They are signings designed to try to take the team to the next level in the Championship.

Stoke City quickly brought in Phil Jagielka after he left Derby and Lewis Baker from Chelsea on permanent deals. They also signed defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis on loan from Manchester City.

Middlesbrough loaned Aaron Connolly from Brighton & Hove Albion and Folarin Balogun from Arsenal, players with Premier League experience.

Why pick out those sides and their January transfer business? They are clubs Millwall are trying to compete with for a place in the play-offs. Finish above them this season and there is a good chance that will be enough for the top six.

This isn’t to be critical of Millwall. Those clubs have much more financial might than the Lions and, though it might be unpalatable to admit, are bigger draws for players in terms of their stadiums and their current potential.

And it’s not to say Millwall won’t end up reflecting on a successful window. The Lions have shown their ambition by bidding for Derby’s Louie Sibley and Zian Flemming of Dutch side Fortuna Sittard.

The problem is those players mentioned above have already made impacts and helped their sides to wins last weekend. And when the race for the top six is so competitive and close, three points at this stage of the season can make a big difference. Had Millwall beaten Forest — and Benik Afobe went so close to getting what surely would have been the winner moments before the visitors scored the only goal in injury-time — they would be six points off Middlesbrough in sixth with a game in hand.

Millwall are probably in their most difficult spell of the season on the back of three consecutive defeats, uncertainty over whether Jed Wallace will still be at the club next month and injury problems.

How they could do with a repeat of the result between the sides earlier this season when Jake Cooper (above) scored a last-minute winner.

Whatever about his future at the club, Wallace is an injury doubt as is George Saville. The Lions have also lost Tom Bradshaw and Sheyi Ojo for most of the rest of the season.

Their backs are to the wall heading to the Seasiders this weekend — they need to pull out a big performance.

Possible Millwall starting XI: 5-2-3: Bialkowski; McNamara, Hutchinson, Cooper, M Wallace, Malone; Mitchell, Evans; Thompson; Bennett, Afobe.

Match odds: Blackpool 6/4 Draw 7/4 Millwall 6/5

Last meeting: Championship (August 28, 2021): Millwall 2-1 Blackpool (J Wallace 64, Cooper 90; Lavery 56).

I agree with the predicted team.

Robson's a cert to start and I think he could do well and become a big player.

The only question mark is against Dale. Perhaps Hamilton will be chosen ahead of him, we'll have to wait and see.

I'll say it now, before the result and not with hindsight.

That's the wrong team selection.

Gabriel should be at RB. Sterling doesn't deserve to keep the shirt after being turned inside out by David Fergusen at hartlepool.

Yates is a far better player than Lavery (who misse a cople of sitters at Hartlepool).

Unless Robson's being used as a bargaining chip he should've started in front of Connolly or at the very lest been on the bench. Connolly's a utility man who stand is there, Robson's a left footed natural midfielder.

Other selections such as Hamilton, Madine, are debatable but the 3 I've pointed out are wrong IMO.

I can see Stewart coming on soon.

He's easily in the team when fit so he needs minutes on the pitch asap to build up his match fitness.

3 points for the 'Pool puts us a million miles away from relegation and vagely in touch with the play offs.
