3rd runway at heathrow on 17:44 - Jan 29 with 1799 views | johann28 | Grand announcements like these always smell to me like someone desperate to impress - in this case the Chancellor, who must know that the chances of this going through are very slim given the local opposition, especially from those who will lose their homes, and sheer costs (SO FAR estimated at an eye-watering £14 billion - by contrast, Gatwick expansion has been estimated at £2.2 billion).
3rd runway at heathrow on 17:44 - Jan 29 with 1791 views | kensalriser | Loftboy, can't you park at Shenfield and get the train/Elizabeth line? That must be quicker and a lot less hassle than driving from there to LR.

3rd runway at heathrow on 17:45 - Jan 29 with 1792 views | dmm | Do you honestly expect the world's airlines to switch to electric planes in 10 or 15 years? Even if the considerable challenges in creating commercial electric planes are overcome, the oil producing nations and industries will do everything in their power to stop that happening. And don't get me started on so called green aviation fuel!
3rd runway at heathrow on 17:56 - Jan 29 with 1734 views | stowmarketrange | It’s £21.90 for a return from Shenfield to anywhere in zone 1 on the Elizabeth line and there is normally 3 of us in the car,so it isn’t very economical to use that route. And the parking is probably the same as we pay at Redbridge station.
3rd runway at heathrow on 17:59 - Jan 29 with 1729 views | PlanetHonneywood | The bigger problem is that 5 months in, he's not made nor appeared to be a discernable difference to that which the UK has endured post-Brexit. Being in opposition is considerably easier than government. People forget how hopelessly forlorn Thatcher's first few years were prior to the Falklands, and the new party in power often needs time to bed in to being in government. Blair, however, was considerably more savvy upon taking the reins; rolling out policies generally seen as favourable and having in Jonathan Powell, a smart operator as his chief of staff. Starmer has already dropped his chief of staff and lead with decisions that have not gone down well. The winter fuel payments were particularly hard to explain. However, he's on to a loser from the outset in my view. I don't think the Tory press will give him a chance and will certainly seek to vilify at every opportunity above and beyond what was metered out to his five immediate predecessors who frequently deserved vilification. But he does need to up his game because we can't necessarily rely upon the Argies to rouse themselves into action (although I suspect Senór Milei would be up for it) and that supposes we've kept our military capabilities up over the last 43 years, to being able to sail 8,000 miles south to engage in a conflict. Frankly, when looking at the matter globally, there appear to be far too many egotistical and idiotic leaders in charge then there are clever ones.

Both sides of that road has huge spaces. What I’m not hearing from the current labour goverment is the complete bollocks that were continually spouted by the Tories ad nauseam that had nothing to do with any policies but just to irritate people and distract them. The point is policies are driven by economic thinking and nothing is gauranteed to work. There is also economic thinking about big and grand does not work either from the thinking of the economist E.F Schumacher. Neo Liberalism is in charge with no plans to go away any time soon regardless who ever the ring master is. Ps. Friend of mine has been waiting 30 odd years to get rid of his house through compulsory purchase who lives in Harmondswoth. [Post edited 29 Jan 18:27]

Don't get me wrong, I'm no Starmer fan boy, but if this is hypocrisy it surely means no-one is ever entitled to change their mind about anything?
