Two things hastened the demise of seaside towns, thinking of Blackpool in particular.

The obvious one being cheap flights to the sun.

The other being the attitude of locals and people in the tourist industry to holidaymakers.

Generally speaking, in Blackpool, it's common to think of tourists as sub-human idiots and to ridicule them. Even pick fights with them in extreme cases. Another consensus would be "you can rip them off, charge them top whack, and give them a low grade product".

One of the worst ideas, that never came to fruition, was the casino thing. Simply a way of extracting as much money, as quickly as possible, from the grockles. The only people a super casino would attract to Blackpool as the types that any normal person would want to steer well clear of.

Take families for instance, how many of them would like to come to Blackpool to chuck £50 notes at a roulette table?

It's time to move away from the tacky and move toward family. Good quality, value for money products, services, and events. Show respect and encourage. Lots of free events - I don't know, what about building up the largest and best market in the North of England from June to September? There are already stuff like vintage car rallys, air shows, the arrival of the Tour of Britain bike race - but not enough. There should be 2 or 3 per week in high season with most being free entry.

Get rid of all this rubbishy stuff like the punk rebellion festival and Glasgow Rangers' weekends.

Go for families and treat them right - That leads to full week or fortnight holidays.

Blackpool is what it is- a holiday resort for the Jeremy Kyle audience. And they probably love it....

Lots of reasons why seaside towns have failed over the last few decades, but some are

1) Cheap holidays abroad

2) Decline of traditional "old style working class jobs" in the nearby large towns and cities.

3) Lack of private investment

4) No plan from central or local government

etc, etc, etc.....

Needs the type of planning and long term solutions that happened after the late 70's/early 80's inner city riots.

Starts with education, but must also be coupled with work (career) opportunity. It's no good if everyone buggers off to London at 21.

Also for local private/public investment I'd like us to try regional investment banks, and also a return of regional stock markets.

There still more positives then negatives for Blackpool, would be a good start as well to talk them up.

I think it is hard to generalise, they all have a twist on the theme.

In Blackpool, is it mainly pitiful (local) political leadership over a very long period that has contributed to the decline.

Icon? It's all Rio Ferdinand's fault.
