As an aside I’ve never been to Coventry. My sister asked me last week if I fancied a cheap day return there for a mooch and a shop and I politely declined

You could say Coventry should be filed in how not to rebuild a city. It's a pity as before the IRA in 1939 and then the Nazis in 1940 bombed it, Coventry was rated as one of the best examples of a medieval city in Europe. Hard to imagine it but it would be a top tourist destination now, if it had survived.

Medieval Spen Street is quite nice, and close to the cathedral. But the rest of it is unremittingly grim, in a way that only 1960s architecture can be. One of the ugliest and most depressing places I have ever been.
I remember stopping for a drink near the Ricoh before a night game some years back. Might have been Bedworth. I was taken aback by how run-down it was.
Stayed at the Ricoh and had a good night out there (young spud was playing there next day). Had a room with a patio leading out into the stadium. Sat out there at midnight in the empty stadium. Spooky...
