He can go and lose himself in the Rangers set up.

We get 250k (+ sell on??? - can anyone clarify?).

I'd say he's too small and at least 3 years from having the smallest of sniffs at the first team.

He's been overrated and it's propelled him into the limelight before his time.

All this won't help his career.

In the long term, It would have been better for Tony to keep his head down for the time being and develop anonymously.

Silly boy.

Happy to spend £250k on a Yates / Hamilton / Sarkic / Anderson / Ekpiteta type. The kind of player who's already excelled at L1 / 2 level.

Good business.

Bye Tony.

Nothing the club can do as he can't sign professional terms in England until he's turned 17. Different rules in Scotland. Can't blame the lad, wish him well.

Weston Departs Blackpool

Blackpool FC can confirm Tony Weston will join Scottish Premiership side Rangers for an undisclosed fee with the Club retaining a financial interest in Tony’s future.

The 16-year-old is one of the brightest stars to have come through the Club’s Academy in recent years, regularly scoring goals at youth level.

Weston’s impressive performances resulted in him winning numerous Academy Player of the Year awards before making a first-team appearance for the Club back in December 2019, coming on as a second-half substitute in the FA Cup victory over Maidstone United.

Weston was offered a 3 year Professional Contract by the Club, the maximum permitted under the Regulations as the Club looked to secure the long term future of the Player. Unfortunately, this was turned down and Weston indicated his desire to explore the potential move to Rangers.

Chief Executive Ben Mansford said:

“It is always disappointing to lose a young player, particularly one who is as talented as Tony and has been with the Club for so long.

“The FIFA regulations offer the Club very little protection against clubs from other nations targeting our talent when they turn 16 years of age. Notwithstanding the amount of time and effort that the Club had spent developing Tony since the age of 9, we had no ability to ensure Tony remained with us.

“As a Club that is seeking to develop its own talent through building our own Academy, this is a situation that must be challenged as soon as possible as it cannot be right that we lose our best young talent for the amounts set down by FIFA.

“Whilst Tony’s exit is very disappointing, Rangers did handle the situation fairly and professionally. I would like to place on record our thanks to Rangers for their handling of this matter.”
