Not The Summer Transfer Thread
at 09:29 14 May 2021

There was talk a while ago about our interest in Gilliead and it's not going away:

Blackpool, Ipswich Town ‘target’ released by Scunthorpe United

Alex Gilliead is leaving Scunthorpe United this summer, as announced on their official club website.

The winger is out of contract at the end of next month and is heading out the exit door on a free transfer.

Gilliead, who is 25 years old, has been linked with a move to League One duo Blackpool and Ipswich Town recently, as per Football League World.

He made 47 appearances in all competitions for Scunthorpe this past season, chipping in with a single goal and four assists.

He has plenty of experience in the Football League having had spells with the likes of Carlisle United, Luton Town, Bradford City and Shrewsbury Town in the past.

The ex-England youth international started his career at Newcastle United but never made a first-team appearance for the North East club.

He bagged five goals in 41 games for Carlisle on loan during the 2015/16 season in his first taste of senior football.

Gilliead then spent a year-and-a-half back in League Two at Bradford after a brief stint at Luton. He was a key player for the Bantams and played 58 times for the Yorkshire club whilst they were in League One.

Shrewsbury came calling that summer and he left Newcastle on a permanent basis. He spent a single season with the Shrews before Scunthorpe signed him in 2019.

He is becoming a free agent now with Blackpool and Ipswich Town linked with a move.

That's just enouigh places for each club to accommodate the more important of the corporate set.

I doubt if many fans will be attending.

This speculation's come at a convenient time for us!!

Kenny Jackett is odds on favourite followed by Calderwood at 3/1.

Nobody else is in sight.

Out of contract players

Well, not surprises but rather that many of our fans were in uproar about Callum MacDonald, Ryan Hardie, Armand Gnaduillet etc. when it was obvious that they weren't players that were compatible with an enlightened approach to today's game.

The retained list will be out quite soon.

There'll be some surprises.

Crossing is exciting for fans to watch and traditional in the English game but is seen as an inefficient way of attacking. Hence we have inverted wide men.

There are statistics out there that show the ratio of crosses from open play are converted into goals.

How many goals have we scored / have been scored against us this season as a result of an open cross?

If at all, low crosses are uses more frequently nowadays. They're more accurate.

You'd have to go back and analyse something like the Feeney / Gnanduillet combination to argue the flip side of that.

I saw this on AVFTT and it's something that shouldn't be happenning in any way, shape or form.

In his shies I'd be completely gutted. Talk about regrets.

I had to google Ritchie Allen.

Someone with too much money must be bankrolling the whole thing. Why, oh why, I wouldn't know.

A quick look tells me that Wyre Villa ply their trade in the division below Wren Rovers, Lytham Town, and Poulton.

I must admit though, when you look at the teams in the same league, there are some good days out:

Another clean sheet today against Bristol Rovers.

Chris Maxwell Wins The Sky Bet League One Golden Glove

21 League Clean Sheets For Goalkeeper

Blackpool goalkeeper Chris Maxwell has won the Sky Bet League One Golden Glove award for the 2020/21 season.

The Seasiders' stopper, who was rested for the victory over Bristol Rovers, finished the campaign on 21 clean sheets after a stunning season between the sticks.

Maxwell made 43 appearances for the Seasiders, giving him a near 50% clean sheet rate, the highest in the division this season amongst those playing at least 10 games.

Maxwell said: “I’m absolutely delighted. This award is massive, not only for me but for the whole team. The manager has worked hard on how we prepare defensively and that has shown in the amount of clean sheets that we’ve had this season.

“This award is certainly one you set a goal for at the start of the season and to have a 50 per cent ratio for clean sheets is something that I’ll look back on for the whole of my career as one of my finest moments and finest seasons that I’ve had.

“However, we’ve still got a job to do this season and two massive Play-Off games to now look forward to. Hopefully we can still come away with a few more clean sheets yet.”

NEW BLOG: Blackpool v Donny & My Thoughts on the Social Media Blackout
at 18:48 9 May 2021

I've been redoing the roof every weekend for the last couple of months and got rained off today. The result was I found an even worse job to do: stripping wallpaper.

It's amazing how the mind wanders while doing the most banal of tasks. One of the things that passed through my head was this thread and in particular Robbie.

Of course, he occasionally posted on here which was a real coup for us what with him considering himself (in his own lunchtime) as message board royalty.

Anyway, I don't know the precise details (probably had his todger lopped off ) but the message board grapevine made it known that he had a big health scare 3 / 4 years ago.

He's since been looking after himself but still, because of his absence (from everywhere, no here in particular) you've got to be concerned for his well-being.
