Five Steps To Heaven

And now the end is near, I turn and face the final curtain - words that we will all know from the late great Frank Sinatra. Words uttered endless times the world over, and of course appropriate not just for the end of another season but also the end of an era as we prepare to bid farewell to the Vetch Field.

It's been another roller coaster of a season at Planet Vetch and as we look at the league table it shows us in third place, nobody has a game in hand and our destiny in our own hands.

We know quite simply that five wins will see us promoted, in all likelihood as the first ever champions of League Two. We also know it is not likely to be as simple as that as the banana skins are out there, our job is to avoid them.

Of the sides at the top end of the table we have arguable the easiest run in with games against

  • Lincoln (Away)

  • Oxford (Home)

  • Bristol Rovers (Away)

  • Shrewsbury (Home)

  • Bury (Away)

Of the five teams, only Lincoln still realistically have something to play for and we know that we will be backed by two capacity crowds at home, with big support in the two away games. There is every possibility that by this time next week we could be talking about a Friday night game that could return us to the league summit.

Alongside Southend, we are the form side in the top five of the division and that has to mean that we go into these last five fixtures with confidence high and surely the belief that we can accumulate the number of points that we need to secure promotion.

It's very easy to point the finger and say that we are not a good team and that we haven't played well but the simple fact is at this moment in time that over 41 games we are the third best side in this division. Of course that will mean Jack Schitt if we aren't in that position or better come May 7th but at this moment in time the facts are indefensible. We have had accusations that we are a poor side, we are a lucky side but anybody within football will tell you that a league table never lies at the end of a season so let's hope it doesn't this season.

Promotion is ours for the taking if we want it. We have to want it, we have to play as if we want it. We said prior to the Macclesfield game that we had eight cup finals ahead of us. We have won the first three of them, we probably need to win three of the remaining five to match the objective set last May by Kenny Jackett himself.

So will we get those results? I can honestly say I think we will and with something to spare. I believe that we will win the two games at the Vetch, and will get one win from either Lincoln or Bristol Rovers. The Bury game could just turn into a party on a smaller scale to the one we witness on April 30.

And quite frankly at this moment in time I really don't give a stuff whether we get there with champagne football or lucky last minute goals so long as we get there. And we can do it.

And if we do it then surely we can only end by saying "We did it our Way?"
