Knight: England Skipper Sold Me Swansea

Knight: England Skipper Said Swansea

Leon Knight has revealed it was new England captain John Terry who told him Swansea was the right move for him when the Liberty Stadium came a calling during the January transfer window.

Knight was at Chelsea with the man who this week was named as successor to David Beckham as captain of his country. However, whilst Terry has gone from strength to strength and has back to back Premiership titles under his belt, Knight never broke through at Stamford Bridge and after loan spells at Huddersfield, QPR, Sheffield Wednesday and Brighton he eventually signed full time for the Seagulls in 2003.

Speaking in today's League newspaper, Knight said "I'd have to say that John Terry has been the biggest influence on me. When I joined Swansea last January he told me it was the correct move for my career. He felt that the Swans promised more than Brighton and that the manager Kenny Jackett was a person who could take me into nearer the Premier League.

"I am still in touch with John and have so much admiration for him as a man. At 25, he is slightly older than me and is a fine example of how you can turn your life around and go on to become a success in your profession.

"Football is too often down to fortune and being in the correct place at the right time. As a kid I rated myself up there with Jermaine Defoe. If Chelsea hadn't signed the amount of big month player they had I feel I would have had a break.

"But there was world class talent everywhere. The opening never did come for me."
