Garry Monk has hailed Dorus De Vries after the keeper broke the clean sheet record

The Swansea City goalkeeper kept his 23rd clean sheet of the season in Monday's 3-0 win over Scunthorpe at the Liberty and in doing so broke the record of Roger Freestone who kept 22 clean sheets in the 1999/2000 title winning season.

And with four games left to go, De Vries has the chance to extend a record with his captain believing that Swansea are lucky to have him.  Ironically, De Vries looked set for the exit door last summer as talks over a new contract stalled and you have to question whether he would still have been here had the management team not changed or Dorus suffered personal loss.

Monk told the Western Mail “Dorus must get a big mention to get 23 clean sheets in the league – half the total games in a season – is an amazing achievement and he deserves a massive pat on the back.

“I know he will say it is down the whole team in front of him, but for a goalkeeper to set such a record is an amazing accomplishment.

“You are up against quality players in the Championship week-in, week-out, and to go so many games without conceding is fantastic.

“The fans really appreciate his work and how hard it is to break that record.

“He has been top drawer this season, he deserves everything he gets.

“He has shown that not only is he a brilliant shot-stopper but his distribution has also been top notch this season.

“We are so pleased to have him at Swansea."
