Sammon Against The Tide! - Super Fish's Late Strike Sinks Hornets!!
Saturday, 19th Oct 2013 17:08 by Daniel J Sewart

Jamie Ward struck twice in the first half to give the Rams a 1-2 lead at the break but after massive pressure in the second half, the Hornets were level and looking likely to win the match. That was until the Super Fish leapt up and stole all 3 points for Derby.

For the first 45, Derby were lively and looking a handful for the home team who were making some awful mistakes with both passes and challenges conceding needless fouls.

Jamie Ward was playing out of his skin and his first two half goals were both a case of being in the right place at the right time - a quality required by any quality striker.

Watford had levelled at 1 — 1 before Ward regained the lead for Derby just before half time.

The second half was all Watford and it was always coming that the home team would finally score a more than deserved equaliser, considering the amount of attacks they had launched at the Rams.

But once the game was all square at 2 — 2, the introduction of Conor Sammon proved to be the match winning move as he showed strength and determination in challenging for every ball that even came close to the Rams giant. He single handedly pulled the Rams up off the canvas and led from the front.

He should have scored when he was played in, one on one with the keeper, but instead, like he so often does, finished poorly and shot straight at the keeper.

But soon after he was given another chance to beat the Hornets keeper, courtesy of a brilliant Will Hughes through ball that dissected 3 Watford defenders, and this time he did just that as he poked the ball into the back of the net.

Sorry I ever doubted your finishing Conor!

The goal seemed to break the Hornets back as despite trying to again mount a challenge, looked as if the 30 minutes or more of extreme pressure they had delivered early in the half, had sapped their energy reserves.

There was no late drama for the Rams as there has so often been in recent years, instead it was a late winner for Conor Sammon who like his fishy namesake, battled against the tide and delivered victory to his team.

Another great away performance, especially as it came against a team firmly in the top 6 who until today were unbeaten at home. Maybe not deserved on the balance of play but it is what you get, not how you get it, that is important, especially when playing away.

Unlike Watford, Steve McClaren remains unbeaten as Rams manager with his team finding a way to win, when it looked for all money, as if the game was about to slip away.

If this is what we can expect to see from Macca’s Rams then there will be few Derby fans lining up to make a complaint!
