Shrewsbury Town 1 Blackpool 0

The previous League Cup exits have been dismissed fairly quickly. Even the defeat to them down the road was eased thanks to their fans mindless pitch invasion. However the defeat to Shrewsbury has far more serious ramifications. Whilst we may have been able to take something out of the second half against Forest, there was nothing for Blackpool fans to take out of this game.

With the news that Joel Dielna and Jeffrey Rentmeister had been brought in to strengthen the Seasiders squad and Ishmael Miller was free to play, there was finally something positive for Blackpool fans to talk about. However, whilst the latter started alongside Joan Oriol, Miller and Dielna had to sit it out on the bench with Tony McMahom out with an injury. It meant another change to the system and new partnerships having to be formed but you get the idea this is how the next few weeks will be.

It was clear who'd had the pre-season early on as Shrewsbury dominated proceedings and Blackpool were lucky still to be in the game with Scott Vernon taking an early chance and Jordan Clark saw his chance deflected wide. In a repeat of Saturday's game, Blackpool's one chance fell to Delfouenso but he put a Zenjov cross over the bar. It then fell to Vernon to score the only goal of the game with Blackpool's defence struggling to make a clearance. Cywka produced the best shot of the half for Blackpool but saw his shot come off the woodwork and Delfouenso failed to put away the follow up.

Ishmael Miller's second half appearance gave 'Pool fans some hope that better times aren't far away as he tried his luck on a couple of occasions, Fonz again had a shot saved and youngster Mark Waddington missed his chance of glory from an Oriol free kick blazing over the bar. It was all mediocre, uninspiring and as you'd expect from a side still being built as 'Pool exited the Capital One Cup at the first stage.

Did Riga say he wants another 10 players? By this standard, the sooner the better.
