Saints have brought in Oriel Romeu from Chelsea on a permanent deal and now need only a central defender to complete Ronald Koeman's perfect squad.

As was rumoured for most of Tuesday it has now been announced that Oriol Romeu is now a Saints player in a deal that has cost Saints around £4-5 million according to whay report you read, this now brings the Saints midfield up to the strength it was last summer with three players who can hold the centre of midfield with contrasting skills from all of them.

It now only leaves the signing of a centre back to give what Ronald Koeman described last week as his "perfect squad" of course the Saints manager will always be in the market for a quality addition at the right price, but when he has brought in a quality central defender he will feel that he is stronger as a squad both in terms of quality and numbers.

Whether that central defender will be Virgil Van Dijk is still open to debate, although rumours persist that Van Dijk has already agreed terms and undergone a medical at St Mary's, the one worry is that Celtic will not let him go until they know their Champions League fate and that will be at least a fortnight.

If Koeman is buying a good centre back to complete the squad, what was the point of getting in Caulker. Does he now not rate him? We would have Yoshida as back-up, and Gardos (his buying last year) is to come back in later.

With Stephens and Turnbull loaned out and Garcia out until spring we will clearly need 4 centre backs to allow for injuries and rotation. Martina will also be emergency cover in this area.Caulker is an excellent addition to the squad and indicative that we intend to compete in all competitions.

Some notes I was given from a good friend who is a long term chelsea season ticket holder about Romeu - "Yes he is good. We signed him from Barcelona a few years ago and there were very high hopes. They had a first refusal buy back clause built in because they rated him so highly. He played a few times and looked good but from memory he got injured and then never got back in the team. I think you may end up very happy with him"........so that sounds good

I think Champions League progression is irrelevant for Celtic - I'd imagine they are more concerned that they have VVD's replacement lined up/signed before they hand him over.

It's got to be better to be spoilt for choice at this point of the season and then if necessary make trimmings in January if squad rotation is becoming an issue. All of the current squad need to be fighting for places and not assuming they are a shoe-in. They all have weaknesses that they can work on. When Vic first joined us his passing was woeful. He'd break down the opposition and then just gift the ball back. Fortunately he has improved in that area, but even now as our best midfilder he shouldn't be resting on his laurels. We're on the up and the competition is getting tougher.
