Could Steve Evans be manager of the month?
Thursday, 7th Apr 2016 18:45 by Tim Whelan

No don’t laugh, Steve Evans really is up for manager of the month, although the man himself say that Rotherham United’s Neil Warnock would be a better shout.

Most of us will be amazed that Evans could even be considered for March’s manager of the month award , considering that the month in question included the shambolic 4-1 defeat to Huddersfield Town. Perhaps the League were taken in by our head coach’s post-match interview, when he argued that “It’s always more difficult playing at Elland Road than anywhere else” and “I don’t go home thinking it’s a 4-1 scoreline.”

That game would have seem to have left Evans closer to the sack than any awards, but I was wondering if they just automatically nominated the managers who won the most points during the month. To be fair, March also included the three consecutive wins over Bolton, Cardiff and Blackburn.

But even on that basis Neil Warnock would have a better claim, as his Rotherham side took ten points during the calendar month. He seems to have completely turned their season around and they kept their run going by beating us on Saturday to pull further away from the relegation positions.

Evans told the Yorkshire Post “We don’t know the results until tomorrow but I think if old Neil Warnock gets that award I think it’s 100 per cent right because you look at results.” But he also said “I think any time you get recognised it is not only a testament to yourself as the head coach or the manager but to all your staff and more importantly your players. I think all bar the last few minutes at the end of a game we had quite a special month but it’s time for us to try and re-create something like that.”

And on the playing side, there are also several contenders with past or present Leeds connections. Mirco Antenucci could win player of the month for his four goals, but that total was matched by Burnley’s Sam Vokes, who had a spell Leeds on loan in his younger days while we were in League One. And another nominee is our former central defender Tom Lees, who now plies his trade at Sheffield Wednesday.

I suppose three wins out of four ain’t bad, but Evans shouldn’t get too excited. Apart from Warnock he also faces competition from Burnley’d Sean Dyche and Cardiff manager Russell Slade. Their sides have also been in fine form in the last couple of months, and unlike us, they might actually finish the season by getting promotion.
