Dennis Wise is reportedly on the verge of quitting Leeds United for a role at Newcastle - UPDATE

The Yorkshire Evening Post today reported that Dennis Wise is on the verge of joining Newcastle United - to become Director of Football under the Kevin Keegan regime.

Other media sources have caught up, proclaiming that the future of the 41-year-old is in some doubt. One report on Tyneside claims that Wise is "tempted" to link up with his old England boss, with his mandate being transfer-signings and youth-development.

And the general feeling is that later this week, Wise will leave Elland Road.

However the official Leeds website have responded by saying that Wise is busy preparing the team for the visit to Southend tomorrow night and have refused to comment on the speculation.

Wise's stock has risen. Having arrived at Leeds in October 2006 with Gus Poyet as his assistant, he was unable to halt Leeds' slide into League One. To make matters worse, Leeds were hit with a 15-point deduction for allegedly failing to compmy with administration rules - the club are currently pursuing the matter through the High Court.

But despite the off-field shambles, Wise's team roared their way up the table and briefly topped League One on Boxing Day.

However, having seen Wise's assistant Gus Poyet casually picked off by Spurs earlier this season, Leeds fans will fear the worse.

The memory of George Graham, who supposedly went on to bigger and better things back in 1998 will still be in the minds of many.

If he does leave, then it will be yet another kick-in-the-teeth to Leeds supporters. Wise's mantra this season has been wanting people who were young, hungry and "in for the long haul" - his decision to allow Shaun Derry to leave springs to mind. Coming at such a critical time of the season, when automatic promotion is still possible, an approach for Wise would be unwelcome as would the likelihood that Dave Bassett - Wises No.2 would step up at least as caretaker manager.

Even though there are Leeds fans out there who still don't like him due to his Chelsea connections, they surely must want him to stay and see this season through at least?

The strength of Wise's so-called "close relationship" with chairman Ken Bates will surely be tested over the next 48-hours or so!
