Lallana A Big Worry !
Lallana A Big Worry !

Saints fans should be worried about the contractual status of Adam Lallana.

Adam Lallana stands less a little more than two months away from leaving St Mary's, with his contract up in the summer, Saints now face an anxious wait to see if Lallana sees his long term future at the club.

Birmingham are believed to be lining up a £3 million pound bid for the man who makes Saints tick and  Saints could have to accept given they could lose him in the summer for only a developement fee decided by a tribunal, a sum that would possibly a lot less than what we could recieve in January.

Some would say that the Club is at fault for allowing his contract to run into its last year, but in truth Lallana has been wise to keep his options open and is probably waiting to see where Saints sit in January, if they sit firmly in the promotion spots, he could opt to sign a new deal and ply his trade next year in the Championship, however if Saints dont get their act together then its hard to see him staying at Saints beyong January.

Not that Saints fans can blame Lallana, he has stayed loyal in the past two seasons when others scuttled off at the first opportunity, he has realised the worth of getting games under his belt and learning his trade rather than sit on the bench at another club in a higher division, but he will be 23 at the end of this season and having played over 100 games for Saints will surely feel he is ready to take a step up, even to the premier league. Inthese days of mercenary's Adam Lallana has done more than we could have expected for the Saints cause.

The key is how Saints do in the coming months, if they can get into the top 2 then he might be persuaded to stay, indeed if promotion is a possibility then Saints may opt to keep Lallana and take a calculated gamble that he will fire us to promotion and be persuaded to sign a new deal in the summer or at worse, Saints may take a financial hit but this could be covered by the fact we are promoted.

I feel that Lallana is unlikely to do anything with regard to a new contract till the summer, he will be happy to help Saints go for promotion and then assess his options the ball is firmly in Saints court as to whether they will cash in in January or take their chances

No one can blame him for keeping his options open. At this early stage of the season anything can happen, but currently there is not much sign of Saints doing any better, or even as well as last season, mainly through lack of consistancy, a quality that eluded them for much of last season and cost any chance of promotion even through the play-offs. They showed at the weekend that they still don't have a plan B when sussed out, and the new manager won't have that long to prove to Lallana's advisors that they are going anywhere this season. At 22 he will feel that he needs to be starting to fulfill his ambitions soon. We can only hope that the key to winning games regularly is found very soon and Saints can move up the table and convince players like Lallana that his future remains at Southampton.

While hoping he stays, I'm not unduly worried if he leaves. We have lost countless players in the past so one more won't be the end of the world.
