Scowy and Foley to Join Academy

TWTD understands that former striker James Scowcroft and ex-coach Steve Foley are to join Bryan Klug’s academy coaching staff. The EPPP shake-up of the academy system means clubs like Town who are opting for Category Two need to appoint additional staff this summer.

Scowcroft, who until last season was still playing for Bury Town, came through the Blues’ youth system under Klug in the mid-nineties and made his first team debut in the 1996/97 season.

The 36-year-old went on to make 204 starts and 50 sub appearances for Town, scoring 55 goals, before moving to Leicester in the summer of 2001. A loan spell in 2005 saw three more Town starts and six sub appearances without scoring.

Scowcroft subsequently spent time with Crystal Palace, Coventry and Leyton Orient before moving to Bury Town, where he has been coaching since he hung up his boots midway through last season, while also working in the media.

Foley joined the Blues coaching staff after leaving Norwich City in 2006 during Jim Magilton’s time as manager. He was jettisoned in the summer of 2010 when Roy Keane was in charge.

The 59-year-old played for Colchester for 10 years and was also a coach and caretaker-manager at Layer Road. Born in Clacton, Foley has also coached at Watford and has recently been working with non-league Leiston and appearing as a pundit on Radio Suffolk.

Elsewhere, Brad Guzan, who was linked with the Blues in March, has signed a new three-year deal with Aston Villa, having previously decided to leave the Premier League side at the end of last season.
