Don't Let This Football Club Down

Home > Story Index >Don't Let The Football Club Down

At long last the club released a statement today that I believe we should have seen after the Carlisle game but maybe the board just believed that it was over reaction to a bad decision. However, further incidents have now shown that some people are hell bent on throwing objects onto the pitch.
I was talking to someone from the club the other day about these incidents and asked them what they could do to stop them. "What more can we do" was the response - short of watching each and every individual in turn so they have issued a plea to all supporters which I would fully endorse the content in there.
The club have asked that "If you witness an individual throwing ANYTHING, we ask you to report him/her to the nearest steward or police officer. If you feel that it is easier, note what they are wearing and where they are in the ground and give that information to a steward/police officer situated elsewhere in the ground. CCTV footage can then be studied to identify the individual concerned."
It is now time for the fans to help out on this front. With two successive home games behind us with such incidents and three more highly charged games at home, there will be people who think this clever. Throwing anything onto the pitch, as the club point out, is a criminal offence and will result in prosecution as soon as you are identified. And, there will be a ban from the Vetch and whilst we need all the support we can get, people who throw things onto the field of play will not really be missed will they?
There are enough people reading this article who have seen it happen and ignored it. I can't condone that but these people will do it again and again and unless they are identified there is a chance that we could end up having to play behind closed doors or worse still have fines or points deductions imposed on the club.
This season has been one huge trauma. I could not stand finding on May 3rd that the league table shows us safe by one point and then seeing that point taken off us because some idiot decides that the throwing of a coin, or similar object, onto the pitch makes him/her feel clever. The club doesn't need that and, dare I say it, the club does not need that individual.
I am led to believe that one edition of the Evening Post this week will contain pictures of people from the Carlisle game. I am sure these people will be suitably ashamed of themselves as much as the club is ashamed of them.
These games are tense and they are hard work to endure but the majority of the crowd can get through them without the need to throw objects - why can't the rest of them. I have no sympathy for anyone caught doing this - if you are guilty then the club won't miss you.
It's up to all of us guys - don't let one or two individuals relegate this football club. I know I wouldn't.
