Jackett Says Add Energy And Hunger

To Ability Add Energy And Hunger

There is little doubt that at some stage this season Kenny Jackett must glance a wistful glance to Colchester, Barnsley and Southend especially when they welcome the giants of Sunderland and Leeds to their gaffs for matches.

Had it not been for an agonizing penalty shoot out defeat at the play off final at the end of May, it would have been Swansea eyeing up those fixtures plus of course the added incentive of a local derby against Cardiff City. But it wasn't to be as Jackett suffered watching his side fall from their lofty New Year position to scraping into the play offs on the last day before that heartbreaking defeat.

But despite that, Jackett remains defiant in his belief that we matched both Southend and Colchester last season but just couldn't match their hunger and energy for the cause which led to our ultimate failure to get the prize we so coveted.

Speaking to the Evening Post, Jackett said "Southend and Colchester are not better than us in terms of ability, They showed more energy, a better work ethic and more athleticism. "We have the ability, we just need to show hunger and energy throughout the year to achieve success. "When the season starts we are going to come out of the traps with all guns blazing. "Some players come back and are like new signings, Steve Watt is back and is looking fit and so is Kevin McLeod. "Out of the three pre-seasons that he has had here, this is Kevin Austin's best. It is the fittest that he has looked and he looks like he is getting younger not older. The perception of the squad changes throughout the summer."

The key this season would appear to believe that the fitness shown now is still there when 2006 turns into 2007 which was very evidently the point when it really went wrong last season and with that the fitness levels looked much lower. And maybe this time around the appointment of a fitness coach for the season is a must.

It is good news if its looking better now for what we have but we have to retain that same level. Can we do it?
