Wednesday, 14th Aug 2019 17:34

Young striker Tyler Smith grabbed himself a brace as Rovers brushed aside League Two Cheltenham Town in the First Round of the Carabao Cup.

The 20-year-old who is on loan from Premiership side Sheffield United was a picked to start upfront with Johnson Clarke-Harris, there was also starts for Kyle Bennett and centre back Alfie Kilgour. Rovers looked pretty comfortable from the off, but the first real chance fell to Kyle Bennett on the half-hour mark, but he saw his shot saved by Flinders in the Cheltenham Town goal.

Rovers took the lead just 8 minutes later, the impressive Kilgour played a long pass to Clarke-Harris who headed down to Bennett, his well-struck shot from 25 yards out was parried by Finders but Smith was on hand to slot home his first goal for Rovers.

Just 4 minutes into the second half Smith got his and Rovers second when he slotted home right-footed from Ollie Clarke's precise through ball. Smith then turned provider to set up a simple tap in for strike partner Clarke-Harris to make it 3-0.

Rovers will now face Premier League side Brighton in the second round of the cup at home.
