Where are the young players from Staplewood? 09:06 - Apr 2 with 1908 viewsgrumpy

Our state- of- the- ark training ground hasn't delivered much lately.

They are not ready yet. They have not learnt yet how to play 5 yard useless passes, mess around with the ball in our own penalty box and buckle under pressure in last 10 mins of games.

I am sure it will happen.

Even in the small glimpses we have seen of Stewart, I doubt very much he will be play as an out an out striker, instead getting drawn in to tippy tippy football on half way line.

Joking apart, we have not produced anything for a long time. It did look like Tyler Dibbling was going to break through but he appears to have disappeared off the radar.

I am just as concerned about the likes of Sam Amo, who looked awesome at the start of this season, but of whom precious little has been seen since.

Poll: Would you take Ward-Prowse back?

Ronald Koeman was critical of our academy when he was with us. It didn't go down well at the time (especially as it was being much lauded in the footballing media) but may be he saw deficiencies in it whilst others were burying their heads in the sand.

Seems to do well enough for England u18s , but he's not good enough to play in the championship.

He hasn't said the gaffer's hair is in beautiful, shiny, healthy condition - or maybe he needs to up his rimming skills?

An academy is only found out 10 years after the event, it is about who did we get into the academy at 8-10 years old, we have had some good players coming through, but increasingly many are getting poached at 16 by bigger clubs.

Koeman wasn't interested in the academy, in truth few managers are, keeping their jobs depend on who is experienced and ready now, not in 2 years time when they could be long gone

.....and probably why they got rid of Alcaraz on loan because he did not fit the mould for our farcical possession based football.

He was the one player who had the ability to open up defences and not scared to have a shot, but was probably getting fined for not playing 5 yard side/back passes. Yet he is good enough for Argentina squad.

Valid points Nick. That said, I still think we have had a poor return from it. We have had some players who look like they may come through but then seem to disappear. But, what do I know - not alot really, it is just an external observation with no inside knowledge.

Yeah well now that automatic promotion is out of the window and the playoffs and pretty much confirmed, we’ve now got 8 games left to let them have a chance and do some squad rotation so that everyone can have a chance to put themselves forward for the playoffs, as well as confirming where we need an improvement and more squad depth in for next season.
But certainly giving some of the younger lads a chance could also help save some quid in picking them rather than buying as much next season

Poll: Who’s everyone’s player of the season?

Along with Ballard too, seems several youngsters got a chance early on but are all now persona non grata

If ever we had an exceptionally talented young player, they would be snapped up by one of the major clubs. We even had to raid Man City reserves for young players. I'm not convinced it's because they have a better academy. Just that they get the best young players in the country. As was stated in this thread, the great young players are poached by the age of 16, so it's not really worth having an academy is it? . At every level, whether it's Wilcox going to Man U, or young players going to the top clubs, you just can't get anywhere. The best players, managers, directors go to the best clubs, where they pay the most money. That's the way it is now.

Ballard suffered a horrible injury whilst on loan at Reading in about November last year. Broke his patella tendon or something like that ?

He will be out for a while yet, but has had the Op, is in rehab and on gym work, so is hoping to be fit for the start of preseason training, so he can be ready for the new season come August.
