Fans United - 16th Dec

It's Fans United Day This Sunday

Home > Story Index >Fans United This Sunday

Many people will remember the first Fans United Day. It was organised by Brighton supporters in 1997, appalled at their Boards decision to sell their old ground and refusal to contemplate building a replacement stadium.

Thousands of fans from right across the UK (and further afield) went to Brighton and gave the Brighton v Hartlepool fixture a carnival atmosphere rarely witnessed inside a football ground. Wimbledon Fans have announced that the "home" fixture against Nottingham Forest FC at Selhurst Park this Sunday (16th December) will be a Fans United Day. They are asking supporters of every team to come along and show their support for the rags to riches team who have not had a proper home game since they abandoned Plough Lane ten years ago! The club has recently proposed a move to Milton Keynes. This was campaigned against vigorously by Dons fans and the Football League has moved twice to rule out the relocation. Yet the club still argue that moving to Milton Keynes remains their best option for survival. The fans however see it differently: "A return to Plough Lane is now a realistic option. The Football League, the supporters, Wimbledon FC and Merton Council have met on the pitch at Plough Lane where Wimbledon Independent Supporters Association (WISA) produced a working architects plan, put together by an independent stadium designer, for a 20,000-seat stadium on Plough Lane. Merton Council also actively and publicly are supporting a return to Plough Lane." Wimbledon Independent Supporters Association To help the Dons' cause in getting back to their home, a Fans United Day has been organised on Sunday 16 December for the televised game against Nottingham Forest (kick off 2.15pm) at Selhurst Park. Wimbledon fans are asking football fans from across the UK to turn up to this match and wear your club colours. The date has been organised so that it will not clash with many other fixtures and as the match is being shown live on TV, it will gain a considerable amount of publicity. Supporters are asked to congregate at the Thomas Farley pub in Thornton Heath in time for a 1.30pm march on the ground. Supporters are then asked to join WFC supporters inside the ground for the duration of the game and for a post-match demonstration.
