Southampton Manager Candidates Decrease As Search For New Man Comes To An End
Our regular columnist Dan takes a look at what he hopes will be the final pair in the list of candidates with a decision imminent.
After Ronald Koeman’s disappointing departure, the final days of Southampton’s search for the manager that will start the season with friendlies in Holland and at home to Athletic Bilbao before the 2016/17 Premier League campaign begins are upon us and a new manager is thought to be appointed in the next few days.
Unless you’re a Saints fan who lives under a rock, you’ll be aware of most of the candidates floating around the papers recently but now that the search is coming to an end it seems like there could be only two candidates left. It may have been just one this morning but now there’s a new name lurking around.
Manuel Pellegrini:
My personal favourite is a very experienced manager having managed in both his native South America (Chile to be exact) and Europe. He’s also the guy who brought Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid! The 62- year old concluded a three-year spell at Man City last season where he won a Premier League title and two League Cups over that period.
Furthermore, his age would hopefully give Saints fans some confidence in him staying as Southampton could potentially be his final job before retirement. We know he’s had the interview and apparently has been offered a three-year contract but this seems to be a very attractive job to managers, especially those who are looking for jobs in England. I hope he comes in and can provide Saints with a season to remember.
Jurgen Klinsmann:
Only in the last hours has this man appeared, as favourite! The German USA National Team manager lost 4-0 this morning to Argentina in the Copa America Semi-Final, a competition where they were hosts. Klinsmann has little club experience with a season at Bayern Munich but was sacked just before the end of that season.
Klinsmann also got Germany to the World Cup Semi-Final in 2006. He has just finished his season and wouldn’t get a decent period of holiday after his team’s impressive Copa America display. This guy would satisfy me if appointed, not excite me like Pellegrini would.
Just to conclude, I hope Les Reed and the men behind the scenes appoint Manuel Pellegrini and do whatever is possible to bring him in. I have no doubt that Pellegrini will be tempted by this job as England is where he wishes to remain. But I also hope the next manager is found in the next few days because then it will probably feel like a weight off Saints’ shoulders and we can fully focus on the season ahead.

Newport Vs U's Match PreviewIt is two weeks since our last league game away to Shrewsbury, when in the end we got a credible draw, but it was another game when we failed to win after scoring first. This has become a bad trend of the season so far, as this is the fifth time this has happened, giving up 11 points from that winning position. Danny Cowley has emphasised how important it is to get that first goal in games, so he will be disappointed we have only managed to go on and win once against Rochdale, when incidently that was the only time we have kept a clean sheet. That is the obvious problem, the defence, and we need to get back to the 2024/25 season when we had 21 clean sheets. Equally the most in League Two that season. After getting 7 points from the first 3 games this season, we have now gone 5 games without a win, or if your glass is half full, we are currently 3 games undefeated.
U's Vs Luton Match PreviewAnother draw on the road and our second 2-2 in eight games after going 111 without one. Once again, it was another game where we’ve led and not taken three points although when you go behind in the 92nd minute escaping with a point must almost feel like a win. It’s a return to the Jersey Mike’s Trophy this weekend, a game intelligently switched from midweek as it suited both clubs, and the visit of Luton Town, the current holders although it was called a different name when they won it of course.
Shrewsbury Vs U's Match PreviewSeven points after three matches was a pleasing, if slightly fortuitous return, but nine points from seven games doesn’t look quite so good. On the balance of play I think nine points is probably about right given the up and down nature of the performances and the last time we had more than nine points after seven games was in the 2020/21 season, so it’s actually been a pretty decent start to the season for us. A trip to Shrewsbury is next up for the U’s. A side who are a few places below us in the table and also one of the lowest scorers in the division. We did the double over them last season and we really could with three points tomorrow. Four of our next five league games are against teams below us in the table so in a few weeks we’ll have a much better idea of what kind of season we’re in for.
Peterborough Vs U's Match Preview“A two legged final in the southern section got us of to a nightmare start, a 2-0 defeat at London Road blew our Wembley dreams apart.
7 days later what a night we saw, helped on by the Barside roar! Twiggy and Buckle reduced the arrears and Paul Abrahams wiped away our tears!!!”
