Eric Ramsay, head coach of Minnesota in the MLS has distanced himself from the Swansea City head coach role. Ramsay, still only just turned their twenty three has his eyes set on his current employers so it looks like that’s another one off the list for now.
Talking to the Minnesota Star Tribune Ramsay stated, "I started my career there, I’m a Welsh guy, and now having taken my first steps as a head coach, I’m sure that every time that job comes up it will be one that I’d be linked with,” he said, speculating that the same would be true for jobs at other Welsh clubs, including Cardiff City and Wrexham. "It’s certainly nothing I’ve had on my radar, nor anything that I’ve spoken to anyone about.”
Ramsay has immediately removed himself from the attentions of Swansea City, but we cast doubt on his statement regards contact. We will leave that there for now. He ended his statement with, "I’m sure it’s the sort of thing that we’ll see from time to time, but at the moment I’m very much focused on what I’m doing here, and I’m really excited for the season to start — so certainly not distracted in any way,”
Well, far better than the responses we heard from Luke Williams when asked about West Bromwich Albion last month, more to come on that by the way. There’s no way it’s going to be left with Luke Williams having the last word and twisting words to suit an agenda.
With Des Buckingham not a contestant for the role and now Eric Ramsay ruling himself our for now attention this morning is turning to Ryan Mason and Jesse Marsch. Mason is at Spurs on money which the Swans could even reach if it was halved. Marsch is currently working as head coach of the Canadian men’s international side. Both would want far more than Luke Williams was on and in Mason’s case it it just looks impossible financially.
We turn to Raphael Wicky, a very respected head coach from Switzerland. Latest news is the Swans have him on their ‘radar’ but to what extent is hard to gauge. The Swans have the capability to operate across Europe and with Richard Montague and Brett Cravatt’s analysis team there’s most certainly some traction in Raphael. He has an excellent win rate as a head coach. Over fifty one percent and his sides score more than two goals a game, Those figures with a plus one hundred and twenty five goal difference over one hundred games at Young Boys is very decent. During his first season Raphael won the domestic double qualifying for Europe. That big step proved difficult for a club with high expectations over a very short time period and surprisingly Raphael was sacked in March 2024. With those stats above, it seemed a bit premature despite a downturn in results. David Wagner also coached at Young Boys.
He had talks with West Brom when Luke was willy waving last month, but they fell apart, he has been linked with Sunderland and now Blackburn Rovers. His services are most certainly being pursued across Europe as well.
Somebody who has creeped into a more prominent role in the betting is Jack Wilshere, he holds a UEFA B licence. Currently at Norwich as a first team coach it seems his journey to an A licence is taking a while. However, he has found a new love for the game since turning to coaching. "It’s given me back the real deep love for football and I didn’t know I’d lost it to be honest. I came back here last year and I was coaching a bit, training a bit. I don’t think the day of the hairdryer has gone – some players actually respond better to that. Some players want to be told. Some players you can be brutally honest with. Some players you need to dress it up a little bit more. If you can make the player feel like the programme – what we’re doing – is really going to help him. Then you get buy-in.”
Despite many Swans fans not being keen on Wilshere it’s hard to gauge. He has absolutely no first team head coach expertise and is still in the early stages of his journey. So, would he see a Swansea job as just a stepping stone ? That would definitely be a gamble. Jack is in there but like Steven Gerrard you have to rule them out, albeit there’s nothing to say either way.
It seems today of we rely on the betting that Jesse Marsch and Raphael Wicky are the main contenders. And we also learn today another manager from central Europe is also under consideration. We will work on that but this race isn’t run by a long way. But doesn’t it all feel like a bit of a gamble ?
