My Dad spent his first few years in Edinburgh and supports Hibs, so I’ve spent quite a bit of time in Leith/Edinburgh over the years. Accidentally spent a day getting nervously drunk/hiding from the locals in a flat in Muirhouse after accepting an offer to watch an England WC game at a mate’s cousin’s flat (which my mate didn’t mention was in Muirhouse). Spent most of the second half with 5-6 17-18 year olds watching the game through his living room window, shouting deeply homophobic abuse at us and banging on the window for us to pass them out some beers, whilst we all pretended we didn’t know they were there. The weather didn’t help, but possibly the most depressing place I’ve been in the UK. I love Scotland to bits, but no-one does grim social housing quite like the Scots. It’s easily the equal of anything in Eastern Europe. Lanarkshire possibly tops the lot.
I loved Trainspotting and it really does capture that side of Edinburgh so well.
If you find yourself in Leith again, get to The Carriers — never had a bad night in there. Took my Dad in there a few years ago after a derby and as a bloke who doesn’t swear and very rarely drinks, it nearly destroyed him.
Sat down at a table and the bloke next to me — Kevin — says, “Are you English?” (curious rather than threatening)
Me: “Aye” (I can’t help myself)
Kevin: “What are you doing here?”
Me: “My Dad’s from Leith — we’ve brought him up for the derby.”
Kevin: “This c unt here?” (pointing at my Dad)
Me: “Aye”
Kevin: “This cu nt?” (just making sure)
Me: Aye — “It’s his 70th birthday”
Kevin — “This cu nt? Is he a Hibby?”
Me: “Aye”
Kevin shouts across to the barman, “Ho, Davie (or whatever he was called) get this cu nt a drink. It’s his fu cking birthday. The cu nt’s 70…you (pointing to some random bloke at the bar) get this cu nt a drink, it’s his fu cking birthday.
Kevin to my Dad: “What do you want to drink?”
My Dad: “Thanks, but you’re alright; I’ve got a drink here”
Kevin: “Don’t be a cu nt, you’re having a fuc king drink”

I worked in Leith docks Disco in the mid eighties, I was there for a couple of weeks working the heavy cranes for the off shore oil industry,
The place was a fcking nightmare crime and drug riddled and hard as fck.
The hotel I was in was a shithole but one of the few places you could get a drink on a Sunday dinnertime but from memory the bar was only opened for an hour.
