NFL PL week 8 (of 16) .. (NFL week 9 of 17) .. Deadline Sunday 18:00 16:57 - Nov 2 with 781 viewsBarsidepete

DURHAM with a terrific 8 points (6-2). LEADBELLY inches up the table -- point gains are hard to come by, so even one or two per week are not bad. I achieved another 6-2 week, so at least I've begun to right the ship... GERRY with a strong 7 points .. MFB_CUFC and RSCOSWORTH with decent 5-3 & 6 point weeks to stay top of the table. THRILLSEEKER had a tough one, but he's capable of stringing lots of great weeks together...

Results:

1pt. games
Detroit 10 v KANSAS CITY 45
New York Giants 49 at NEW ORLEANS 52 -- ridiculous game, a lot of TD passes... Saints' Drew Brees with 7 TD passes. NYG's Eli Manning with 6. This score is not a typo
San Diego 26 at BALTIMORE 29
ARIZONA 34 at Cleveland 20
CINCINNATI 16 at Pittsburgh 10
Green Bay 10 at DENVER 29

2pt. games
MINNESOTA 23 at Chicago 20
New York Jets 20 at OAKLAND 34

Other games:
Miami 7 at NEW ENGLAND 36 (Thursday)
TAMPA BAY 23 at Atlanta 20
Tennessee 6 at HOUSTON 20
San Francisco 6 at ST LOUIS 27
SEATTLE 13 at Dallas 12

Tonight on Sky Sports 1:

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS at CAROLINA PANTHERS -- 20:30 ET/01:30 GMT kick-off.

The AFC South is mediocre this year.

Indianapolis Colts 3-4
Houston Texans 3-5
Jacksonville Jaguars 2-5
Tennessee Titans 1-6

In the NFC South, a different story.

Carolina Panthers 6-0
Atlanta Falcons 6-2
New Orleans Saints 4-4
Tampa Bay Bucs 3-4

Even if the Colts lose they will remain on top with the Texans. Panthers have a chance to make a statement tonight. The Saints winning 52-49 yesterday, I don't see how you could count them out for the playoffs. Buccaneers have a rookie quarterback, meaning they are punching above their weight.

ST LOUIS CARDINALS?

Oh my goodness. Fixed that.

The St Louis Cardinals (Missouri) are the legendary baseball team, one of the oldest clubs in the history of baseball ... The World Series finished last night with Kansas City (Missouri) winning it all... BUT the Arizona Cardinals (Phoenix) did an MK Dons and moved from St Louis. The Los Angeles Rams did a similar MKD and packed their bags for St Louis.

As an NFL fan for many decades, it's still weird to have the Rams be in St Louis and the Arizona Cardinals not be the NFL's ST LOUIS CARDINALS, where they played 1960-1987.

To add to the quagmire, it was the CHICAGO CARDINALS from 1920-1959. The reason they are the Arizona Cardinals and have that helmet logo is because they were the St Louis Cardinals.

And the Rams started life in Cleveland (I think)

You are absolutely correct. I had to look up some specifics, but the Rams were the Cleveland Rams from 1936-1945, taking off for Los Angeles in 1946.

The Cleveland Browns (named after founder Paul Brown) were founded in 1945. The Baltimore Colts moved to Indianapolis in 1984 when, as you may see in infamous YouTube videos, they had lorries in Bmore late night. It was snowing. They moved to Indianapolis. The Browns became the Baltimore Ravens when in 1996 they jumped ship from Ohio.

In 1999 the NFL returned a franchise to Cleveland, what you now know as the Cleveland Browns.

The fact that there is no relegation aspect, when you buy yourself into ownership, you have the right to --with enough votes -- move to another city. The fans abandon you? You have a right to depart.

A relegation tier makes no sense here as the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) is kind of the second tier. The attendances at many college games are better than the professional league.

I wonder if that could happen someday in England, where some cubs in the Football league (Championship, L1, L2) have more fans in stadiums than in the BPL. Anyway.

...

Monday it was:

Indianapolis Colts 26 at CAROLINA PANTHERS 29 in overtime. Shockingly enough, Colts are 3-5 but remain in first in their division (Houston Texans also 3-5). The Panthers stay unbeaten at 7-0 in the NFC South (Atlanta Falcons 6-2).

Wait. So with Twickenham, Wembley and the new Spurs stadium there could be 5 NFL games in England?? Heard that on TalkSport tonight...

I think it's only a matter of time before England gets an NFL club. That would be so outstanding and cool 😃

Go on then. Think it will be the Jacksonville Jaguars who will become the London Jaguars. Sh&t. So the U's on Saturday and the Jags on a Sunday when I fly over? Nice 😋

Here is Thursday night. Set your DVR if you care. Game is on Sky Sports (20:30 ET/01:30 GMT)

CLEVELAND BROWNS (2-6) at CINCINNATI BENGALS (7-0)

AFC North
Cincinnati Bengals 7-0
Pittsburgh Steelers 4-4
Cleveland Browns 2-6
Baltimore Ravens 2-6

Starting quarterback for the Browns will be the youngster, potential phenom, Johnny Manziel, the one-time QB star of the Texas A&M Aggies--he won the 2012 Heisman trophy as the best college player in America. (A & M means Agricultural and Mining) ... that's a university northwest of Houston, Texas.

Thursday night result:

Cleveland 10 at CINCINNATI 31

That improved the Bengals' record to 8-0. Heard something on ESPN that 38% of teams that started 8-0 ultimately won the Superb Owl.

Given that the New England Patriots, the Denver Broncos, and the Carolina Panthers are 7-0 going into this weekend, that's an interesting statistic.

The Green Bay Packers are presently 6-1. The Minnesota Vikings 5-2. Why do I feel the Pack and Vikes are not too worried about that historical precedent?

I still have my money on a Packers v Patriots Super Bowl.

I can't believe I made them so "easy" this week.

Everyone, what do we have, a Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots fan-base? (posters or merely read the thread)? -- watch out. MFB is going to getcha. *he understands the NFL better than I have been able to understand. He's probably posting the Pick-8 next week or the week after. I'm good at "point-spread" winners; he's outstanding at straight up winners. That's a different Vegas bet.

Thank goodness I didn't post Washington Redskins at New England Patriots. There would be double posts for Pats to destroy the Skins on Sunday

And I concede the fact that UK fans like the New England Patriots, and others around the world follow them too. They're really hard to hate on. I mean, what the heck is wrong with the Pats. If you like the NFL, there is your team. I'm a Redskins and Raiders supporter. But if the Pats end up in the title game, I'm not going to be upset. This is a beautiful team. I mean, how can you dislike Boston, Massachusetts --a state NO ONE KNOWS HOW SPELL in New England? -- Boston is easy. The one of 50 states, we just spell it "Mass."

In case some haven't noticed, MFB is my partner in crime. Like Happy and I have given each other stick over the years, M and I have gotten along splendidly. Happy ran the HL for nearly a decade, then I did for nearly a half decade, M now does and he does an amazing job--and he remains the co-admin of the NFL PL..

A couple of newbies need to understand, this is how we do it. We post, we go to matches together, we have pints. It's really not that complicated. We don't use curse words at each other.

I love our U's.

I thought this was going to be my week to get in front of MFB but instead I'm in further behind thanks to the Packers. MFB is so good at calling the marginal games correctly that he's virtually impossible to beat across a whole season.

I'm about to post the next week.

MFB has a 43-21 (56 pts) and you have 42-22 (53 pts) and it's 7 weeks left. You could be in first based on the pick percentage tie-breaker in a week or two.

No one here--the NFL PL which has been around for what, nearly a decade now?--disputes the fact you understand your NFL.

Games for week 9 (week 10 of 17) coming right up. An hour or so.
