JM takes his rejuvenated U’s charges to Rodney Parade today to take on Graham Westley’s Newport County. The Exiles may be basement dwellers, but so were several clubs who now reside in the top half of the table, the U’s being one such club. JM knows therefore not to take the Exiles for granted or to show any complacency.
It will be almost another month until Colchester play another home match and with Exeter and Blackpool to come it is important to secure three points today in order to maintain the promotion push.
The pitch is likely to be heavy at best with Newport Gwent Dragons (who ground share with Newport RFC and the Exiles) having played there last night and winning 34-10.
This may well have a bearing on Newport’s wretched home form, but bear in mind that the playing surface is the same for the away teams as well and the Exiles have beaten Carlisle and held Plymouth at Rodney Parade.
A mild 7 degrees is forecast for this afternoon and the change in weather will be welcomed after the last 48 hours.
Westley has signed 9 new players since the January transfer window as he seeks a winning combination. Two of his signings Mickey Demetriou and Florent Bojaj may well play whilst for the U’s JM continues to run the rule over Tommy O’Sullivan, ex Cardiff midfield player.

Indeed - very scrappy game on an exceptionally poor pitch, and to be honest we allowed ourselves to sink somewhat to the (hoof) level of a Newport side that are surely destined for relegation.
