Dynamic Super U's to hang Hartlepool out to dry at the WHCS 19:21 - Feb 24 with 550 viewsdurham_exile

This Saturday sees the reverse fixture from the opening day of the season when the Super U’s travelled to the North East of England to play Hartlepool United. That day the U’s drew 1-1 with Tom Eastman’s smart early finish cancelled out by a Paynter pen. The attendance was 4,055 including 238 of the faithful.

The U’s lined up 4,5,1 although it was suggested that when attacking it was 4,3,3:

Walker
Brindley Eastman Prosser Kinsella
Wright Lapslie Guthrie Szmodics Slater
Porter

Subs: Sembie-Ferris for Wright, Johnstone for Porter and Bonne for Szmodics

The reason I include this detail is only to show how our team (and formation) has changed since 6 Aug 16. Possibly only 5 from that starting XI will play at the WHCS tomorrow. Guthrie was moved from midfield to his preferred position of striker and Slater has blossomed since that initial game. The defence is unrecognisable from the August game.

Now since that game the U’s have managed to secure 7th place in the table with 47 points from 32 games whilst the Monkey Hangers are currently in 22nd place with 32 points from 32 games. Contributors to this board will remember that we were languishing in a similar position prior to our brilliant run from November onwards and so JM will point out to his charges not to adopt the same lack lustre approach prevalent last week at Accrington Stanley. We need to start well and then build on early promise against a Dave Jones Hartlepool United side, who are fragile away from home.

Hartlepool will have Plymouth’s on loan player Louis Rooney back after last week’s impressive 1-1 draw with the Devonians whilst Nathan Thomas (who impressed against us in August) will need careful marshalling tomorrow.

JM will note that his team selection is becoming easier for all the wrong reasons. Frankie Kent has been ruled out for the season with ankle ligament problems, whilst the luckless Denny Johnstone suffered a bucket handle cartilage tear last week when he was fouled in the penalty area at Accrington, but the referee, who was simply woeful, not only missed the tackle, but also waved play on. Sadly, Johnstone is also out for the season.

Tom Eastman, who originally was facing surgery, is now going down the injection route. I am certainly no physiotherapist, but I am concerned that a course of Prolotherapy injections is now the course of action and that there might be pressure to return him before the end of the season. Eastman has been one of our most consistent performers for some years now and I do hope that the right decision and course of treatment is being pursued.

Tuesday evening saw another home victory over our fiends from Buckinghamshire. Now Wycombe were the better team for spells of the game, but thanks to Big George’s wonder strike, we won the game to give us that vital 7th place. The game was also notable for Cameron James’ excellent debut for the Super U’s.

JM will ensure that there is no complacency or Monkey business tomorrow and that a professional job will be achieved to take us to the magical 50 points with a further 13 games to play (7 home and 6 away after Saturday). It is likely that 25 further points will be required to guarantee a top seven place.

Now what about that all-important team line up on Saturday. My advice would be, don’t change a winning team or squad, especially as options are limited. There is talk about Craig Slater in the squad, but I think get him fit ready for the bigger challenges to come against Pompey, Cambridge, Doncaster and Plymouth. Therefore, something along the following for the Monkey Hangers:

Possible 3,4,3, formation:

Walker

Brindley James Elokobi

Garvan Lapslie Murray Briggs

Guthrie Porter Dickenson

Subs:

Barnes Wynter Vincent-Young Pyke Fosu Edge Wright

With the weather improving and some decent sunshine anticipated, perhaps the crowd could nudge 4,000. I think they might be rewarded with some goals and three valuable points.

Enjoy the game.

Cameron James had already made his debut , so presume it was his full league debut .

Poll: No half measure either 1 or 2 ?

Do not like the sound of the leg injury for Kurtis Guthrie.

We must get him fit for vital games coming up.

It looked really bad. He was waving for attention as soon as he went down and was clearly in a lot of pain. His left leg was put into an inflatable cast before he was stretchered off.

Referee obviously didn't think the challenge was a foul and waved on play, leaving poor Guthrie writhing in agony for what seemed like ages. Not clever at all.

Poll: Safe standing at football; yes, know or don't know?

LB sadly that has happened in successive weeks with first Johnstone and now Guthrie.

Looks like Pyke to partner Porter on Tuesday.

Losing Guthrie would be the worst thing that could happen, here's hoping that it is not as bad as first feared.

Apparently Guthrie has got a badly swollen ankle, that is waiting to be scanned. Looks certain to miss some games, but hopefully won't be out for the season.
