League Two Promotion hopefulls 14:32 - Mar 6 with 984 viewsdurham_exile

JM and SB will have been delighted on Saturday, not only to secure a vital point but also to witness tremendous away support from the faithful with 1,415 present at the Cambs Glass Stadium.

We are very much at the business end of the season now with most teams down to the last 11 or 12 games. It would appear that realistically there are nine teams vying for seven places, but what about the rivals for the play offs and who will achieve the three automatic promotion places.

Doncaster 35 69
Plymouth 34 65
Carlisle 35 58
Luton 34 57
Pompey 34 56
Stevenage 35 55
Exeter 35 54
Mansfield 35 52
COL U 35 51

Doncaster Rovers are currently top of the league and still to lose at home. In John Marquis they have a quality striker but even he is fallible and as a team they have missed 6 penalties this season. Darren Ferguson will be looking to secure an important three points at home to Cheltenham next Saturday.

Form - Last 7 games — D D L D D W D (Crawley 0—0 Away)
Of their final 11 matches, the following are against rivals for promotion:
Plymouth H
Mansfield H
COL U A
Exeter H

Plymouth Argyle are in second place and have already had a successful season with a good FA Cup run and a replay against Liverpool. Derek Adams will be looking to secure the points at home to Blackpool on Tuesday night.

Form — Last 7 games — W W L D D L W (Carlisle 2-0 Home)
Of their final 11 matches, the following are against rivals for promotion:
Mansfield A
Doncaster A
Pompey A
COL U A

Still clinging onto third place are Keith Curle’s Carlisle United. They took 326 supporters to Plymouth on Saturday and watched another dismal performance and a 2-0 defeat.

Form — Last 7 games — W L W W L L L (Plymouth 0-2 Away)
Of their final 11 matches, the following are against rivals for promotion:
Luton H
Mansfield A
Exeter A
Stevenage H

Nathan Jones manages a resurgent Luton Town, who have moved up to fourth place.
They defeated a poor Yeovil Town side 4-0 on Saturday, buoyed on by 698 of their faithful. They have one of the best strikers in the League in Danny Hylton.

Form — Last 7 games — W W W D D L W (Yeovil 4-0 Away)
Of their final 12 matches, the following are against rivals for promotion:
Stevenage H
Carlisle A
Exeter H
COL U A
Mansfield A

Portsmouth managed by Paul Cook are somewhat of a Jekyll and Hyde outfit at present in fifth place. Booed off by their supporters on Saturday after a dismal defeat at home to Crewe Alexandra and a game in which they failed to register a shot on target. Their bete noire is Gary Roberts, personally I dislike the player as do many others. They play Crawley Away on Tuesday night in what should be an interesting encounter ahead of the crunch game on Saturday at the WHCS.

Form — Last 7 games — L W W D W D L (Crewe 0-1 Home)
Of their final 12 matches, the following are against rivals for promotion:
COL U A
Stevenage A
Plymouth H
Mansfield A

With all respect to Stevenage they are the surprise package in sixth place. Managed by Darren Sarll they have been quietly moving up the table and in Matty Godden they have a player bang in form.

Form — Last 7 games — W W W D W W W (Notts Co 3-0 Home)
Of their final 11 matches, the following are against rivals for promotion:
Luton A
Pompey H
COL U A
Carlisle A

Could the Grecians be on the slide; although in seventh place, Paul Tisdale’s Exeter City travelled to Hartlepool on Saturday with 166 of their faithful and lost 3-1, although reports suggest that they had more of the play. I reckon that their final game of the season at home to Carlisle will determine both clubs fates.

Form — Last 7 games — W L D D D W L (Hartlepool 1-3 Away)
Of their final 11 matches, the following are against rivals for promotion:
Luton A
Doncaster A
Carlisle H

Steve Evans’ Mansfield Town side are Stagging along in eighth place and have an in-form striker in Shaq Coulthirst. They are the only one of the top nine sides who still have to play every one of their rivals in a punishing run in.

Form — Last 7 games — W W D L W D D (Cheltenham 0-0 Away)
Of their final 11 matches, the following are against rivals for promotion:
Plymouth H
COL U A
Carlisle A
Exeter H
Doncaster A
Luton H
Stevenage A
Pompey H

Last but by no means least are JM's Colchester United. Home form is going to be crucial for the Super U’s as we set about securing a play-off berth. Notwithstanding the injuries, JM is working wonders with a team missing 5 of its top players with a further 7 also injured.

The return of Sammy Szmodics could not have been better on Saturday after he secured the vital but deserved equaliser to set up a classic encounter with Pompey on Saturday at the WHCS.

Form — Last 7 games — W L L W W L D (Cambridge 1-1 Away)
Of our final 11 matches, the following are against rivals for promotion:
Pompey H
Mansfield H
Luton H
Stevenage H
Doncaster H
Plymouth H

There are still either 33 or 36 points to play for depending on the number of games to play. Doncaster and Plymouth look well positioned for two of the top three automatic positions. I reckon that Carlisle will fall away and Luton Town will fill that third spot. Exeter could well also miss out altogether leaving the four play-off positions to be contested by Pompey, Colchester Stevenage and Carlisle.

Keep 28th May free for a Play Off Final against Portsmouth.

Unless of course we manage to secure all our home victories against the rivals and win another three Aways to sneak that third place. It’s going to be an exciting run in.

Up the Super U’s

Oxf and TS - after the misery of the last four season fights against relegation, the last of which we finally lost, it is really enjoyable to be in a position with a shout at the play offs or better albeit with a depleted team through injury.

Essentially 11 Cup Finals to play, with the prospect of another three games and Wembley glory!

Whilst disappointed not to be at Cambridge on Saturday with the 1,415, it was tremendous to see the pictures of the great support and to hear the celebrations after Sammy Szmodics equaliser.

The last time that I can remember such elation at a U's match was the season redeeming win against PNE or the 4-1 against Brentford or the FA Cup win against the Blades or promotion to the Championship with Parky. Heady times indeed.

Should JM achieve promotion this season it will arguably be a greater achievement with a smaller budget, depleted team and smaller crowds (although I expect the last few home games to have plenty of atmosphere. Pompey will be bringing 2,200 on Saturday and the last team to do that was dirty Leeds at the WHCS.

Portsmouth missed a penalty but then scored from the resulting corner to go third in the table. Come on Crawley.

There were more than 2,200 Leeds fans at WHCS that day. That was just the official away allocation.

Well the Pompey result at Crawley is confirmed, three points for the dockyard outfit.

It changes nothing for Saturday, we still have to win.

Plymouth humbled by the Seasiders this evening.

Great article Durham and we are still in with a shot at the playoffs despite our injuries but what an opportunity for the young players.

Durham!
Thankyou - an inspirational piece and encouraging. As burnsie says the youngsters have a chance to prove themselves and if we fail it will have been a decent show since November. Better than the struggling side of the recent past with a bit of hope for the future in my view but we shall soon see.
Beating Pompey will be a potential catalyst for this season- lose to them and it pprobably means we're not quite grown-up enough yet!?
