Colchester would get 6,500
Southend would get 7,000

The question of bigger club is irrelevant, there is only one team in Essex.
Ask any Farmers on Tuesday night after the U's have won and see what their opinion of losing to their East Anglian rivals is.

Southend are bigger than us, no doubts and if we were both challenging for promotion qould say they would draw 9000 whereas we would be lucky to get 5500.
Ipswich are bigger than both.
On the subject ot rivals, Ipswich supporters don't count us and in fact the sensible ones "like us." They have an intense hatred of Norwich known by most as the "scum". |  | | |

However, as a proportion of local population, Southend is poorly supported. By contrast, Colchester gates as a percentage of local population is right up there with clubs that are considered well supported.
The phrase "punching above our weight" is hence particularly relevant in this Financial Fair Play era. We are undoubtedly in the right Division relative to levels of support.

I lived and worked in SE Essex for 9 years and Noah's figures are demonstrable. Additionally, Southend could call on Leigh, Westcliff, Rayleigh, Hadleigh, Canvey, Basildon and Benfleet et al. as well as Wickford for additional support probably amounting to another 300 000+ ? Whereas, the U's tend to draw on smaller towns like Halstead, Wivenhoe, Clacton, Coggeshall etc. I also think what I'll call "the Ipswich effect" reduces our base more than "the West Ham effect" does at Roots Hall.
All through my life Southend have tended be in a higher division than the U's and have been better suppported - the two are linked of course. It has always seemed inevitable and it doesn't bother me one bit...............altho' I hated it the great year when we went up together because they doubled us. But I enjoyed it the following year in the Championship!!!
