Mariners to sink U's without trace 10:22 - Sep 26 with 1183 viewsgerry_us

With the current abysmal away form and also the loss of the unbeaten home record at the weekend I see an extremely torrid time for the U's tonight.
Suspect that JM's team will be Walker, then 10 across the back line.
Have some thought for Durham Exile who will be attending this evening as he probably hasn't seen the U's win away "this century".

.......and does reverse psychology actually work?
May just be an early Christmas present? Hey, first to get Santa in this season.

Obviously I cannot agree with the sentiments of the title but I understand the reasoning for it!!!!

Having read Gerry’s reverse psychology piece for tonight’s game, I am firmly of the belief that nothing less than a win is required for the Super U’s.

Wycombe put paid to the U’s unbeaten home record on Saturday and then some idiot from Buckinghamshire let off a pyrotechnic device in the Away end after the game which will lead to sanctions on the Chairboys when we play the return fixture.

Returning to the football, JM takes his severely under pressure U’s to Blundell Park this evening in the knowledge that our away form is so dismal that frankly it can only get better.

Last February I met up with Gerry and we enjoyed sumptuous fish n chips at Steels Corner House. Tonight, it will be Papas restaurant on Cleethorpes’ Pier.

It is true that I have yet to see Colchester win in the last three seasons. An alarming stat (so far this season) at the best of times but with back to back matches against the Mariners and the Glovers, the prospect of further defeats is not an appetising one.

So tonight, is all about winning and I would take any win anyhow.

After the surprise inclusion of Loft and Reid at the weekend squad (after respective injuries) JM is unable to name “marmite” in the squad, after he has picked up 5 yellow cards this season. The good news is that Murray will replace him in the starting XI. After his “goalkeeping stint” Mikael Mandron is also available for tonight, but it is uncertain whether he will play or whether Brandon Hanlan will start after his classy strike against the Chairboys. I believe that JM will opt for Mandron and Hanlan and use Wright as an impact player from the bench.

Grimsby, under Russell Slade have mustered 12 points and are safely mid-table at present. Make no mistake it will not be easy this evening, but it is not insurmountable.

JM will line up along these lines in a 3,4,1,2 formation:

Walker

Eastman Inniss Kent

Jackson Murray Loft Reid

Szmodics

Mandron Hanlan

Subs:
Gilmartin, James, Comley, Kabamba, Odelusi, Vincent-Young, Wright

The excellent news this week is that Kurtis Guthrie managed 30 mins for the U23 squad this week. His arrival within the next fortnight will transform the striking ability of the team and JM must consider who is best to partner him up front. Personally, I reckon Hanlan will be the perfect foil but let us see what JM decides.

Today’s weather is good with dry bright conditions in Durham and the forecast for Grimsby/Cleethorpes is similar and 16 degrees. Bring it on.

Safe journey to the travelling faithful and enjoy the game.

Three points, a decent fish n chip supper and good company, what more could one ask for?

Are the players and management really under pressure? With Cowling as chairman McGreal probably has the safest job in football and the players know full well they will stay in the team, unless injured, because the back-ups aren't good enough to displace them. Fan dissent is limited but then if we can only attract 3,000 Us supporters for a home game against Wycombe we are getting down to the hardcore so that isn't really surprising.

On Saturday we created plenty of chances and their 'keeper was MOTM. Despite the loss it was an entertaining game. Did I enjoy it though? Sadly, not at all.

I posted a while back that I had lost interest in proceedings at Col U. Last Saturday really confirmed in my own mind that attending games is now a very long way from the best use of my time on a Saturday afternoon. I can't explain why but I felt about as excited as I have done when attending games as a neutral in the past. Disengaged is what I am and had I not bought a season ticket I would be skipping a lot of games this season.

Scott Vernon to score the winner tonight btw.

Kyle Reid makes it 1-0 to the U's, courtesy of a howler from the Grimsby 'keeper, and within seconds Inniss returns the favour to allow Grimsby to equalise. FFS!

1-1 at half-time, despite some sustained pressure from Grimsby towards the end, including hitting the post. There's a lot to do if we're going to get anything out of this game, but Come On Col U!

Reid again! 2-1 to the U's, now can we hold on before the fog bank rolls in much more and the game is called off?

Penalty conceded by Mandron, but no red card this time, 2-2 with 6 minutes of injury time to go.

Finished 2-2 - not quite an early Xmas present Gerry, but always a very difficult place to go, particularly midweek. Well done to the Brave 89 who made the trip, particularly our very own Durham - a late equaliser is never easy to swallow, but on the flip side, our first away point of the season has to be celebrated. Next up Yeovil, so I will be there to see if we can go one better.

I reckon there were more than 89 of us. Because the visitors turnstiles didn't open promptly, at least 20 of us gained access via the Mariner's (home) bar, just as we did last year (thanks Grimsby) and were politely escorted around the pitch to the visitors bar. We had to show tickets, but we didn't enter via any turnstiles. I suspect we were not counted. Not a surprising miscount given the announcer welcomed Frankie Kent as substitute for Sammy despite Kent having been on the pitch since kick-off, but I guess he couldn't see past half way line either. We made far more noise than the 3,000 home fans and I reckon that since they couldn't see us they probably thought there were many more of us than the reality.

Entertaining game, we probably deserved a win, but I want to focus on the Grimsby welcome (initially as above), hospitality and stewarding......FANTASTIC.

The visitors bar has a cosy pub like atmosphere with visitors scarves dressing the lofted ceiling. The bar manager remembered us from last year and had ordered extra bottled 'real ale' (we had drank it dry last year). The stewards made extra effort to chat with everybody, and when the fog moved in, encouraged us to move en-bloc from behind the goal to the corner. Familiar with the local conditions, they told us we will see better from that angle (and were right). The half time pie was a proper pie with real meat rather than a thickened broth of giblets. Cowling and Waddington to note; this was how to look after proper fans.

We gained home fan respect for our generous support of Scott Vernon and when the announcement came that 89 U's fans had made the trip we were applauded. Kind words too from home fans as we climbed aboard the 'bus, quite different from the provocation from the Wycombe hooligans. The behaviour of the U's fans was high-spirited, but the respect from stewards and sensible "light touch" was all that was necessary. Hugely enjoyable, came away much less disappointed with the result because it made watching a competitive football match a good experience not the sterile, sanitised, breeze block, South Stand. Who wants to eat a pie in a catering area that has the same ambience as the urinals and the beer is Green King IPAswitch dishwater. Well done Grimsby,!
