Q & A 's & thoughts on the global game .

Riveting stuff so far, wondered why the Iranians had barcodes on the rear of their shirts , then realized it was their names .

Actually I have to say I am enjoying it even though it is early doors.
Have seen all the games so far!

Late goals are definitely playing a big part. Current game has 20 mins to play and I suspect there is at least one more goal to come.

Come on England

CCCP is the abbreviation for the full name (in Russian) of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. However it has not been applicable since 1991. Let's rejoice in the autonomy now enjoyed by Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

Sadly, some territory in Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Ukraine remains in dispute, whilst the Crimea has been invaded. The FIFA 2018 World Cup is hence being hosted by the 'Russian Federation' that was constituted on Christmas Day 1991 and not by "CCCP", albeit a certain gentleman might have aspirations of its reformation. Hence 'CCCP' is dead, let's not give it any recognition today.

But having recently visited the Russian Federation I am not surprised at the superb infrastructure in place for this event as in the major cities much of it existed long before the World Cup. The Moscow Metro is astonishing and you will see gold plated Porsches in Red Square as the country has moved far from its "Soviet" roots. As regards the football, Cristiano Renaldo has brought the tournament to life. I might even watch a few more matches.

After last nights El Classico 3-3 draw, is the rest of the competition worth watching ?

England off to a flyer ?

Since Euro 96 , England perform better on the Beeb having a win ratio of 58% from the 19 games that have exclusively shown on the channel, compared to 21% win rate or games shown on ITV.

England are off to a flyer. 170 - 2 off 26 overs against Australia at Sofia Gardens in Cardiff.

This second half is awful. We're going to get battered by Belgium.

First 20 minutes we looked decent but missed chances. Since then it has been pedestrian and tedious. Typical Engalnd display I'm afraid, not helped by a referee who looks totally out of his depth. Why am I even mildly surprised?

Football guru Mrs Leadbelly said England would score from the corner and they did!

Not an entertaining display but we kept going and secured victory at the end.

Two things...is the entire English nation unable to produce a better left back than Harry Maguire and why were there so few people in the stadium?

I read that ITV are going to show wrestling again. After watching Tunisia it seems like the BBC got in before them.

PL pundits earlier this year said Maguire was the best passer and player bringing the ball from the back ( bit like Boobby Moore without the composure and skill ), personally prefer Cahill who looks less unadventurous but solid.
But sometimes not always the best set of players fit together, nobody thought Jack Charlton was the real deal but did the job and has a medal to prove it.

Let's get Loftus-Check and Rashford in the starting eleven for Alli and Sterling has you could see the relief of Kane's get out of jail second had after those squandered earlier chances .

Every side should have a sponsored name player on the pitch eg Japan - Honda !!

Getting confusing with most countries having to play in one colour kit . Who's idea was that ?

Notice with VAR, back to only three officials on pitch .

The only thing that was proved last night, was that England have no strength in depth within the squad.

Dier — Not sure if he knows his best position and judging by league and WC form this year, it shouldn’t be DM for a top 6 club, nor at the great heights of WC football.

Trent Arnold — great prospect but hugely inexperienced. Wasted set piece after set piece and countless counter opportunities for Belgium with the big lads from the back waiting for a decent delivery, leaving us exposed when not clearing 1st man.

Vardy — This guy is at best a great club player. Plays best with a mid table premiership team who play on the counter. Best thing he did was reject move to arsenal and wouldn’t have suited his game at all. NOT AN INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALLER

Delph — I don’t get it. Exiled for years at City until Pep brought him in. Does the simple things well (especially with the quality city have), but again, certainly not an international player, and would be best playing Henderson in Deep lying playmaker role with Loftus-Cheek pushing forward with his driving runs.

Welbeck — Hardly played in PL last season. Never impresses. Reminds me of Emile Heskey, apart from spending most of the time in physio room rather than on the floor.

Cahill — slow & clumsy. On paper should be our best CB. No wonder he isn’t getting in Chelsea team.

Now…..

1st team looks great. Strong spine of team with Stones, Henderson & Kane. Sterling although runs down blind alleys shows great attacking intent. When was the last time we had a winger who wanted to take players on at every opportunity? A little more spacial awareness would give him the end product he enjoys in PL. My only critique is that he needs to hog the touchline more and stretch the play. Too many times does he drift in field and get crowded out. With Kane in the box, surely the only game plan can be getting to the by-line with WB’s overlapping.

Trippier & Henderson have hugely surprised me. Henderson seems to be more adventurous in his distribution and IMO is the best passer in squad. Trippier is no thrills but knows where to put the ball to create danger.

Still think Wilshere should have been on the plane. Lacking options in No 10 role. Ali is not consistent and always has a petty red card imminent.

Rashford — Whilst young and inexperienced, proved fearless everytime ive seen him in England shirt, and if you keep getting in the right positions, law of averages suggest you will get the rub of the green at some point.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not criticising the team selection last night. Understand everyone needs match time to be able to step in. Understand key players could not be risked ahead of round of 16 tie. It has served to convince that should Kane/Henderson get injured I do not see where any creativity or end product will come from.

Doesn’t matter if we won the group of not, I think we would struggle against either Colombia or Japan. Looks like James Rodrigues will be out through injury which may be our saving grace. All I do know is that you cant win the tournament with 11 players, and unfortunately for England thats about all we have who can play at the level required.

I think plenty of optimism for the future, but cant see us going too far this year, even with the easier route.

What does concern me, is lack of CB & ST.

Good analysis Colukev. I agree with most of that.

As Burnsie has said, it was an opportunity to try out other players against top class opposition. They will, hopefully, have learnt. But it's more than that, it enabled first choice players to be rested, avoid injury and red/yellow cards.

In any event, whatever the results over the next four days, England will at least have reached the last 9.

Turn back the clock to Pre 1966

Alf - Not won any cup competitions with the Tractorboys, rather negative play .

Keepers - Banks and Russian Yashin best two in the World, area where we are very strong though .

Defence - Lots of pressure on Captain Moore.
Full backs - Cohen & Wilson solid enough . Charlton ( J) are you serious ?

Midfield - Charlton ( B) - dangerous when going forward . Peters what does he do . Ball will run his legs off for the cause . Stiles, are you serious ?

Forwards - Hunt & Hurst, neither World Class , Greaves must play if we have any chance of getting to final and gold boot ( no not a pub ).

Likely tournament stars - Eusabio , Beckenbaur and Pele.

Prediction

Only two to get hands on Jules Rimet Trophy , Queen Elizabeth II and Pickles . The whole squad is going World Cup Willie .

Well done England but the game as a spectacle totally ruined for me by the blatant, constant cheating of Colombia. When will FIFA actually do something about this?

Surely the first referee to issue a red card using VAR will be immortalised in World Cup history like the 1966 "Russian Linesman". I really don't understand the reluctance.
