Whilst I sadly accept we will lose our better players largely as a result of failing to get out of this wretched league, Frankie Kent can do an awful lot better than the posh.
At least when you leave Frankie go somewhere so that career can develop.

Still no new striker

LB I posted a comment about Colchester's interest in Grant as a "Dickenson" replacement on 30 May. Source Plymouth local paper.
Interestingly there has been press comment naming Grant for the past 7 days, suggesting there is some truth in the rumour.
He is 31 and hasn't played since last Boxing Day, but he could do a job for us up front or on the wing (right).

I'm more interested in signing an out and out striker, but the Posh have now signed Mo Eisa from Bristol City!!!!!

All quiet on the Szmodics front too.

Kane Hemmings still available but not for much longer I suspect.

Kent has signed a three year deal at Peterbore. Transfer fee undisclosed, obviously. Will this result in some inward movement in the next few days?

Hopefully gives us a bit of clarity and as important cash in the bank so fingers crossed.
Also I hope we have a sell on clause as Frankie could go all the way to the top.
Posh Chairman describing it as a 'substantial transfer fee'.

Pleased for Frankie as a person as he deserves the rise but boy is that bad news for the U’s. As a defender he had such a good knack of scoring goals last year, and that’ll be sorely missed. In some ways I’d have rather lost Sammie (though we still probably will) because as good as he is, losing him would have forced us to attack differently, which doesn’t necessarily equate to being a bad thing.

Presume the Posh was desirable for Frankie as it’s not a million miles away and it could be a sensible stepping stone to the Championship in the next couple of seasons.

Hopefully we’ll reinvest the money in some wise signings.

Although Colchester had accepted the Posh offer for Szmodics it would seem that Bristol City, Hull City and Derby County are all keen to bid for his services. A sum of 600k has been rumoured.

The substantial transfer figure for Frankie Kent is undisclosed but it is undoubtedly more than Charlton paid for Macca Bonne.

This suggests that Posh have paid 250k plus for Kent.

Some of this money must be used to bring in a striker.
Every day of delay is reducing the size of the player pot that we are trying to deal in.

Very interesting video Mick, but no explanation as to why Szmodics didn't sign for them when fee agreed with col chester
Seems that he is set for the championship perhaps Derby would be the best club.

Robbie comes out as 'the good guy' so hopefully the karma will help us to get a couple of the '"right guts' for our club.

Quite a spat between Posh Chairman MacAnthony and Rangers over the ex Oldham player George Edmundson who was the subject of a £500K bid from Posh for his services but has now joined the Gers for £700K.

I do not understand though why Kent's fee is not being made public, after all it is clearly less than Posh were prepared to pay for Edmundson (£500K), but more than Charlton have paid Orient for Bonne (£200K) so lets assume £300K which MacAnthony described as a substantial fee.

None of this of course helps poor old Colchester who have lost a quality defender, and are shortly to lose their star midfielder to any one of three Championship clubs. Derby would have to be the best when viewed against Hull and Bristol City prospects wise.

In the meantime the silence from the JobServe is deafening regarding new signings and especially the opportunity for a new striker.

All of this is very frustrating and it doesn't matter how many plaudits RC receives from DA regarding the Frankie Kent transfer he now needs to act in Colchester's interest to obtain someone who is going to score the goals to gain us promotion from the doldrums of league two.

Very frustrated and annoyed and incandescent is how I am feeling at present.

Can't blame club for not making fee public because if it is between £300 & £500k anybody we went after would immediately have there transfer fee increased.

So, as things stand at the moment:

Ins
Sammy McLeod - U23 midfielder makes the well-trodden journey from the Jammers. He will have improved his salary certainly, but it won't be a significant addition to our wage bill;

Danny Collinge - defender signed on a free transfer after spending five years at VfB Stuttgart, provided we get international clearance on 1st July. Probably no more than a modest salary added to the wage bill.

Tom Eastman - defender signs a new 2-year contract, almost certainly on a better salary, but still just a relatively insignificant increase to our overall wage bill;

Noah Chilvers, Callum Jones and Ollie Sims - extended U23 contracts, probably with improved salaries, but unlikely to be much compared to the overall wage bill;

Outs
A whole bunch of U23 players - David Agboola, Aaron Barnes, George Brown, Ken Charles, Noah Chesmain, Chris Forino, Arjanit Krasniqi, Eoin McKeown, Paul Rooney, Decarrey Sheriff, Sam Warde, and Will Wright. None of them would have been on much of a salary, but added up probably still a decent amount removed from our wage bill;

Kevin Horlock - U23 boss moves to Needham Market, after fulfilling an Acting role for them at the end of last season. Decent salary removed from our wage bill;

Mika Mandron - forward who has been released at the end of his contract. Probably not the best paid in the squad, but still likely to be a modest to decent salary removed from our wage bill;

Sam Saunders - experienced midfielder who has turned down a new contract and retired. No doubt what would have been a decent salary removed from the wage bill;

Frankie Kent - defender signed by Posh for an undisclosed fee that has been described as "significant" by Posh Chief Darragh MacAnthony. Free-spending Darren Ferguson originally wanted Oldham's George Edmundson, but that deal went bad after details were leaked, with Edmundson eventually going to Rangers for £700k. MacAnthony believes Kent is "better than Edmundson", by implication suggesting the transfer fee may have been broadly comparable with Edmundson's £700k value. After 8 years at Col U, in addition to the fee, his transfer probably also means a decent chunk removed from our wage bill;

Brennan Dickenson - the pacy winger has turned a new contract and gone to MK Dons, no doubt for a much-improved salary as well as League 1 football. He was probably one of our better paid players, so a decent salary removed from our wage bill;

Maybe's
Sammie Szmodics - attacking midfielder that is still maybe, but only so far as where he'll end up, rather than whether he'll actually go. Sammie is out of contract, but the U's will be eligible for a player development compensation payment, which is initially an agreed fee between us and his new club. With multiple clubs, including Bristol City and Derby County, chasing Sammie, and Sammie himself appearing to want to do right by the club that has nurtured him since he was seven years old, that compensation payment is likely to be substantially more than usual in such circumstances, with a figure of perhaps £500-600k being mentioned at times;

Rene Gilmartin - goalkeeper and goalkeeping coach, and if the rumour mill is to be believed, linked with the possible move of Sammie to Bristol City. As head coach and no. 1 'keeper choice, Rene's transfer would represent a significant reduction to our wage bill. I doubt we'll receive a fee per se, most likely it'll just add to the final valuation for Sammie, if the Bristol City move happens;

Dean Ager - U23 contract offered, not sure if it has been accepted though;

In, and then Out again - the Hokey Cokey category
Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe - the forward extends his contract with Col U for another year, but stays out on loan at Derry City, at least until their season finishes in mid-November. Most likely cash-neutral as far as our wage bill is concerned.

Anyone forgotten?

burnsie - the problem is that after the much publicised target that was Joel Grant he has remained with Plymouth who are now raiding Lowe's former club for players.

We are one of an exclusive club in League Two, who has yet to sign anyone other than U21 players.

The time is fast approaching when the squad will be returning for pre season training (beginning of July) and with no new faces and little updates on the walking wounded from last season we will find that it wont matter what targets we are after because they will have already been snapped up by others.

Result we either have to manage with a reduced squad or we risk paying top dollar for some below par players in the last knockings.

This whole business is being spectacularly mishandled, shades of May's Brexit deal, no actually its not that good.

Sorry if I am negative over this, but it is a disaster. Last close season we made some very good signings, which should have been good enough to get us over the promotion line but after the fiasco of January and February results we played poorly and only the arrival of Saunders spurred the team to almost achieve the impossible at the death with an 87th minute equaliser at Morecambe from Newport's Matt putting us out of our misery on the terraces at Sincil Bank.

No I'm furious about this inactivity and lack of opportunities being sought at present.

Very good point GOSBTS. Even though Sammie gets a fair amount of goals I don't think he fits into the way we want to play, but is picked for his goal scoring ability. Other than his goals I don't think he will be missed that much.

Finally got round to watching this video today and was really insightful - thanks for posting mfb! Especially interesting was the chairman’s claim that there is an obsession in players to play in the Championship, implying that they’d rather miss out on League One altogether. Good to hear Frankie had his head screwed on as I think it’ll benefit his career.

Hopefully Robbie takes Darragh up on his offer when the time is right and poaches some talent from the Posh.

Encouraging to hear all the good noises regards the club, but the chairman has got his man. It's like not playing well, but getting the right result, especially away, then say all the good things about your opponents , job done .
We all move on, best wishes to Frankie and his career,
Why do players want to play in the Championship ? PL clubs awash with younger players who will never get a chance for the first team .

Probably earn a lot more in the Championship than League 1 and promotion means PL. Reasons enough to skip League 1 given the opportunity.

Could Hull be the favourites to sign Sammie? They are rumoured to have made a firm offer, and they also appear to be the Championship club Kent turned down.
