Mobile Phone help 19:02 - May 28 with 2704 viewsPunteR

Im with a company called Plan.com that took over from o2. I was on a 2 year contact with a samsung A16. Two months ago i was due a renewal . They phoned me up to see if i wanted to upgrade my phone or reduce my monthly phone bill. I was happy with my phone so it seemed obvious just to reduce my bill from £32 to £27 p/m. Ive had no problems with company or phone in the 2 years.
2 months in and low and behold my phone has decided to die on me. It wont charge up.
I contacted the company and they told me there's nothing they can do. Im now tied into a 2 year contract with no phone and they wont replace because the new contract does not come with a phone.
So i now have to start a new contract with whoever and pay monthly and also still pay £27 p/m to a contract that's completely worthless to me. There's a £900 buy out clause!
Do a file this under the should have known better file or is there an answer to this whereby im not going to be paying for two phone contracts for one phone?
Anybody had similar or any advise?

I’ve been with O2 for a few years and my last contract was sim only. The previous one included my iPhone 5,which does everything I need. The only downside is the battery life.It can be fully charged and the next minute switch itself off due to the battery being dead.
My contract is up soon and I don’t know whether to renew my sim only and buy a new battery,or pay double my normal bill and get a new phone.
I might be in the same situation as you are now in a month or two.

When my contract was up for renewal with o2, Plan.com phoned me and offered a better deal. Tbh i never heard of them and was a bit unsure but they were great at first, no issues at all. I do wonder if phones have been made to last only two years. I should have just upgraded the phone.

Unfortunately you were done there. A £5 reduction in your bill without getting a phone is a terrible deal, you could have just bought a SIM only deal for probably £10 a month.

Try a local phone shop, might be a cheap repair.

First a couple of questions: 1) do you mean Samsung A6 phone (not A16)? 2) How much data, minutes and text have plan.com given you?

It sounds like although they’ve done nothing illegal, you’ve been taken advantage of. It seems like your initial £32 per month two year deal was made up of two things: 1) the cost of buying the phone itself over two years; and 2) the cost of providing you with calls, text and data via O2.
When the two years expired, you now owned the phone, so really you only needed to get a new deal for the calls, text and data only: what’s called a “Sim only” plan. A typical monthly deal for unlimited calls, texts and say 4 Gb of data is around £10per month, so unless you are on a sensational data offer it sounds like you’ve be taken advantage off. They seemed to offer you a £5 saving but really have overcharged you by about £17. To make it worse, they seem to have locked you into a two year deal with hefty cancellation charges, when most deals are yearly or even monthly. Always beware cold callers. It’s a bit naughty of O2 to sell on this lead to plan.com.

And now that the ’phone has packed up, you need to either try to get out of the deal or buy another phone ”Sim free”, and move your Sim card over from the dead phone (assuming o2 did not lock the phone, which is another story) .

On the first option, as you were cold called it may be worth phoning to complain that you were missold in that they did not make it clear that the price did not include a phone warranty extension or that you were locked in for two years. If you explain that the phone is dead, they may offer something. If not, it’s probably the second option, as at least you get something for your £27.

£27 for what is effectively a sim-only deal is pretty insane.

Maybe you can buy a 2nd hand semi-decent phone from ebay for a couple of hundred pounds?

Sorry its an A3 2017. Unlimited texts minutes not sure on data but hardly ever charged much, about £1.50. I go online loads. It was on a business contract whatever difference that means?. Never billed more than £35 p/m and had been really good to deal with up till now.
Thanks for the link and advise M40R

Kick up as much a fuss as you can wherever you can (see point 27 on the MSE link) because that contract is outrageous.

The phone sounds fixable, do take it in to a repair shop, I trust you've tried different cables and given the contacts a clean already.

A3s go for around £50 in good nick second hand on eBay but with the new wave of Chinese manufacturers you can get something top of the line for £150 now.

In general hese days I would strongly advise anyone to go SIM only and buy the phone separately.

In the repair shop now. £90.
Yeh i didn't think anything of it at the time of the renewal. I just thought it was a decent monthly payment for all calls text and 4g data. It would have been nice for the company to not rip me off but hey ho lifes a bitch. I will be kicking off again now i've got some good advice from the lfw faithful.

I have my business phones with Plan.com and have been with them for over three years. To be honest I personally have never had a problem with them. We have five apple phones with them and the rate we pay is very reasonable. It was a much better deal than O2 was offereing when I changed over. I have just renewed my contract for two years but have decided now to buy the phones if and when I want to upgrade.

Try calling them again and speaking to a different agent - that can sometimes work. But if you can get your phone repaired for £90 is that not the problem sorted?

Good luck.

The problem i have now with Plan, as pointed out is they've knowingly given me a terrible deal. The phone i have now is paid for, i shouldn't be paying £17 p/m more than a £10 sim only deal. That deal is not really up for negotiating now unfortunately but i'll see what they can do.
Like you though i havnt had any issues before and have been great. Easy to talk to, always helped. Decent price i thought. Maybe i got unlucky with the dickwad that happened to be in the office at the time of my contract renewal?
I really am the worst for keeping up to date with insurance , utility contracts etc. I hate it. I just like to set up my direct debit and not have to worry about it.
