The fairy tale of New York 20:43 - Dec 1 with 5248 views | loftboy | Heard it on the radio today and noticed they changed the words from “ cheap lousy fagg*t” to “you’re cheap and you’re haggered “. I totally understand why this has been done but how did they do it seeing as Kirsty McCall has been dead for a few years.?

The fairy tale of New York on 00:23 - Dec 2 with 3016 views | CLAREMAN1995 | This is just another example of the PC world gone mad and it shows no sign of letting up soon.Any immigrant in the US can relate to this incredible song not just the irish contingent its crosses all divides IMO.I have written instructions left that its played at my funeral hopefully the priest wont be too angry at the bad words .I will have to make a change saying I want the original lyrics now. I read an article a few months ago that people close to Kristy McCall thinks she was the victim of foul play not a drowning .A beautiful voice silenced way too young RIP

The fairy tale of New York on 03:59 - Dec 2 with 2944 views | BazzaInTheLoft | Coincidently Shane McGowen was on the Radio the other day talking about this. He fully endorsed the change and said that the 30 year old song was out of date but that it’s original meaning wasn’t meant to be offensive. He said he’d not been put under any pressure by anyone to change it and that it was all a storm in a teacup. Nice of him.

It wasn't just written by Shane, although he did write the words: https://inews.co.uk/culture/music/pogues-fairytale-new-york-30-co-writer-jem-fin It's like an annuity for them so I don't blame them for selling a few shares in sl@ts and f@ggots or whatever. I'd always play the original though. To get it into perspective this site wouldn't let me type the words either.
The fairy tale of New York on 09:29 - Dec 2 with 2587 views | CamberleyR | I'm sure I've read somewhere that in Ireland historically a f@ggott was a slang term for a lazy, feckless person. Given the Irish roots of The Pogues it seems plausible and that it wasn't meant the other way. Brian Mac may be able to confirm? [Post edited 2 Dec 2019 9:30]

I think your knowledge is better than mine. I know the original but know the song mostly because Metallica famously covered it. There is a great vid from 92/3ish where 'Animal' joins them on stage at Earls court. [Post edited 2 Dec 2019 10:43]

Ditto 'so what!' by Crass. "So what if Jesus died on the cross, so what about the fecker, I don't give a toss". Should have been the Christmas No.1 every year for the last 35 years. [Post edited 2 Dec 2019 22:07]

Not only do they not have a choir, but the choir filmed in the video didn't know the words to Galway Bay, so they were filmed singing "M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E". Even less people know that

Maybe, Camberley, though I've never heard it used in that context.

The fairy tale of New York on 04:03 - Dec 3 with 1799 views | Benny_the_Ball | Apparently 'fagg*t' is an old Irish slang word for a lazy person or a waster as well as a historical Americanism for an unpleasant or contemptible woman. I was an 80s child (when the track was recorded) and to my memory the term referred to a male homosexual. That said it just doesn't make sense why a straight male singer and straight female counterpart would hurl homophobic insults at each other. [Post edited 3 Dec 2019 4:10]
