I wonder if Bonne (like many immature players before him) had an attitude problem? Many will recall the promotional video he commissioned suggesting he was good enough for immediate Premier League recognition. Soon after, and still under 21, he dropped into non-league and has since had to prove himself the hard way.
He left Col U in 2017 for (then) National League side Leyton Orient where he excelled at that level. But then, so did Dan Holman, who apart from flirting with Cheltenham and Orient has never since showed promise at any higher levels (last seen at Brackley). What do league coaching staff know that we don't?
Bonne is now 25, and it has taken him four years to reach his full Championship potential. Freddie Lapado is another that is now on his fifteenth club (including loans) since leaving the U's in 2014 before realising his potential at Plymouth then latterly at Rotherham.
Good luck to both Bonne and Lapado, and hopefully both can go further forward. But with their talent, I wonder if both might have got there faster has they been wiser? We are often quick to criticise our coaches when talented youngsters seemingly struggle to break through, but when some players take so long to mature, is it really the coaches fault? Szmodics (also 25) is another with ambition that has only just broken through after bench-warming for two seasons. Maybe it is us fans that expect too much from our kids? |  | | |

When Bonne was released , eyebrows were raised, but did not McG hint that he had demanded a first team spot , which a manager quite rightly cannot guarantee.
Even before release, was not convincing when on loan for Lincoln playing in the National League at the time . Remember seeing him and Jack Marriott , on loan from Tractorboys , playing up front in a U23 game which quite frankly you would have taken a set of tracksuit tops for has a good deal , which if you were told then both would be playing in the Championship under big fees, you would have seriously questioned.
Think the clubs track record of losing out of released players who have gone on show their potential elsewhere and achieved a decent career has a professional footballer is pretty impressive , the best being John Taylor , who after release has a midfielder was turned into a centre forward at Cambridge thereafter. |  |

Ha Ha! I’ll give you that one although he didn’t make 70+ appearances and wasn’t offered a new contract before he left but granted Sheffield Wednesday made a bit of an error there. | |
