Bluebirds will be grounded at the JSCS today 11:35 - Apr 5 with 1973 viewsdurham_exile

The new era of HM and PT secured a crucial point at Bolton on Good Friday and now prepare to entertain the Bluebirds at the JSCS. Rob Kelly’s team are also struggling but have only a minus 3-goal difference suggesting that their games this season have largely been close affairs.

Table:

Barrow 37 41 -3
COL U 39 40 -17
Southend 39 35 -29
Grimsby 38 33 -27

Remaining Fixtures:

Barrow

Colchester A
Carlisle H
Exeter H
Orient A
PV H
Tranmere A
FGR A
Southend H
Exeter A

COL U

Barrow H
Oldham A
Walsall H
Southend H
Cheltenham A
Salford H
Tranmere A

Southend

Morecambe A
Crawley H
Exeter A
Colchester A
Orient H
Barrow A
Newport H

Grimsby

Cheltenham H
Bradford A
Bolton H
Morecambe H
Oldham A
Exeter A
PV H
Cambridge A

Make no mistake it is still too close for comfort and whatever happens we need to win at least three more of our games (Barrow, Walsall, Southend) and then any other points are priceless.

Grimsby and Southend are still very much favourites for Relegation.

HM had inspired the team in the second half on Friday and perhaps we were unlucky not to have secured all three points. Tommy Smith clocked up his 400th career appearance against the Trotters.

Ainsley and Kwame are back from International duty, but I do not think either will start today. They will be needed for the run in.

So, what about the team today:

Gerken

Welch-Hayes Eastman Smith Clampin

Lapslie Pell Stevenson

Senior Wiredu Nouble

Subs:

George Tchamadeu Doherty Cowan-Hall Chilvers Folivi Brown

Now against Tranmere we should have scored four goals given the chances that we managed to squander. Gerry has already suggested a good omen for today after the wheel fell off his barrow. I reckon that it is about time that we won a game handsomely which will improve confidence, improve goal difference, and move us to 43 points, within touching distance of safety.

Something like 3-0 today will work wonders for the team.

The weather today will be 5 degrees c in Colchester with a 10% chance of precipitation and mainly sunny conditions. It is a gloriously sunny but cold day in Durham after a covering of overnight snow and so the match should be played in ideal conditions at JSCS.

Big positives; Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu who has been advanced to the striking role and a vastly improved Courtney Senior who has added more guile to his play. Ryan Clampin brings a real plus to the left back position and Big Frank is always able to put in a solid performance.

I remain optimistic after an improved performance at Bolton, and we should all enjoy the game today.

Keep the faith.

Trying to look at the positives - we are 1 more point better off. than this time yesterday

It is unbelievable how we miss so many chances.

Harriott should have been replaced as looked very tired and it was his error on the halfway line that led to their equalizer.

Wiredu was immense again today

Now need Morecambe to do us a huge favour tomorrow night

We're not currently good enough for any better fate. If we're honest we all expected them to equalize. We don't have or deploy the necessary equipment to be better. Grim times indeed.

What is so disappointing about the result is that we created enough chances to have won the game.

Wiredu first half, Big Frank second should have scored.

We are not good enough to defend a 1-0 scoreline and hopefully HM will have realised that packing the defence and midfield is not the answer to seeing the game out.

We now need to get something at Boundary Park.

Barrow 38 42 -3
COL U 40 41 -17
Southend 39 35 -29
Grimsby 39 34 -27

One thing is certain we cannot drop any points to Walsall or Southend they must be two victories.

I am incandescent!

Put the wheel back on your Barrow Gerry!

Come on Morecambe!!!!!

Dunno about upwards. Staying in our current position will do.

But that outcome was predictable when we didn't take our chances. Barrow repeatedly score in Q4. Why, because they have ambition and no lazy showboaters. Can only hope Morecambe don't screw up tomorrow. Then we remain in a good place. But if the Shrimpers win, I fear the worst.

ANOTHER self inflicted wound. Only got ourselves to blame AGAIN.

No grumbles if we finish in the R positions.

Going to do it the hard way by drawing all our remaining games!
How we need a win
Did not see the game but was the red correct to disallow our goal and penalty shout?

Don't recall a penalty shout, but goal should have stood. Wiredu was stood there, didn't foul keeper. Didn't even touch keeper. Didnt even jump. Keeper had two hands on ball, but smacks the ball on Wiredu's head and drops it. But to be fair to the referee, without VAR it was never going to be given.

We had enough opportunities to be out of sight, but our normal inept forwards failed. A Norris or Robertson would have seen us home. We did our usual trick, sat too deep, tried to defend, nobody to hold the ball up front. At least it was a point. It might have been nil.

Senior went to ground but it wasn't a pen.

There must be a case for VAR for the EFL.

The technology exists and must be introduced.

We should have won today.

Two gilt edges chances were missed.

Still we move on to Boundary Park.

Survival still remains in our own hands.

We must however beat Southend. If we don't we don't deserve to stay up.

Walsall must also be put to the sword.

The last three fixtures are all difficult so the points must be garnered before then.

The mistake made today was going to defence minded in the last twenty minutes.

HM and PT must learn fast from this.

In reflection I looked for three points over Easter and we have two and so far lost no ground to Southend or Grimsby so suppose we should be relatively happy
One win and a two/three more draws should do us
At first I felt very downbeat but a beer and a whisky made me more reflective and hopefully Morecambe will win tomorrow.

On Facebook there was plenty of positivity after the 0-0 with Bolton but the negativity is definitely back after today’s result. Obviously on paper it looks a worse result but the performance seemed much improved going by the stats.

So I can imagine. We should have been out of sight long before their equaliser, including the perfectly good goal which was disallowed, but that’s what happens when you try and hold on to a one goal lead. Personally, I thought the Bolton performance was better, almost as if we play better when not burdened by the pressure of expectation - who knew?

However, if Morecambe do the business tonight, that will be two more games chalked off and no ground gained by the bottom two, so it’s not all bad I suppose.

"If Morecambe do the business..."

Sides at the top are often the more psychologically burdened by expectation. Nobody in Lancashire expects a positive Southend result. If this was a HGPL fixture I would predict a Shrimpers win. Then a Morecambe win is assured.

Hang on, are they are not both shell-fish labelled? Let's hope those of northern origin emerge as the King Prawns.

Morecambe are doing their best to cock things up.

And even worse Crawley will roll over on Saturday at Roots Hall.

If we don't get something at Oldham we could be level on points Saturday night.

Things can only get better!

Given how well they played against us as Harrogate did it is nauseating that they are allowing Scummend to get a result.

Morecambe 1-1 Southend FT. No great damage done given our goal difference means, in effect, a six point advantage with merely six to play. Overall, not a bad Easter.

That's the reality unfortunately - finished 1-1, so us and Grimsby get 2 points over Easter, Southend just 1 (and an extra -2 goal difference). Six games to go.
