Shrimpers to be potted by the Super U's at the JSCS 13:33 - Apr 19 with 4151 viewsdurham_exile

The outpouring of emotion on Saturday night was tangible and full of considerable relief. A vital victory well deserved and so important to our ability to avoid relegation against a Walsall team who are themselves safe from the drop.

HM and PT fashioned a win which was essential to give a vital boost. It will of course count for nothing if we fail to beat our Essex fiends from Southend on Tuesday night. Phil “Orange” Brown has already ratcheted up the pressure by calling the game their most important game in their 115-year history. Of course, this is nonsense, it is only one game and only worth three points, but the difference in victory over unthinkable defeat is crucial for both teams.

A win for Colchester will put a nine-point difference between the two teams (goal difference included makes it ten) and essentially relegate Southend. Any other result is frankly unthinkable.

Despite their victory over Bolton — Grimsby have the most difficult remaining fixtures with Morecambe, Exeter and Cambridge all vying for promotion.

Southend and Grimsby remain favourites to leave the Football League.

Table:

Colchester 42 -19 44
Southend 42 -29 38
Grimsby 41 -27 37

Remaining fixtures:

Colchester:
Southend H (Relegation favourites)
Cheltenham A (Challenging for Automatic Promotion)
Salford H (Challenging for Play Offs)
Tranmere A (Challenging for Play Offs, possible Automatic Promotion)

Southend:
Colchester A (Favourites to avoid Relegation)
Orient H (Flirting with Play Offs)
Barrow A (Almost safe from Relegation)
Newport H (Challenging for Play Offs, possible Automatic Promotion)

Grimsby:
Morecambe H (Challenging for Automatic Promotion)
Oldham A (Safe from Relegation)
Exeter A (Challenging for Play Offs)
PV H (Safe from Relegation — midtable mediocrity)
Cambridge A (Challenging for Automatic Promotion - Possible Champions)

I do agree that it is the most important game ever played between the two teams (Southend have 33 wins, to our 27 with 17 draws) but there is obvious danger in applying so much pressure that the game becomes a negative, dangerous, and potentially explosive affair with at least one red card being issued to an errant player.

Nerves will play a big part at least early on, the psychological aspect that defeat is unthinkable will perhaps spoil the game as a spectacle. However as far as we are concerned it is all about getting three points to effectively condemn Southend to relegation.

It should be remembered notwithstanding our 6-1 victory earlier in the season we have not defeated Southend in the league since 2010. However, that matters not when we take to the field on Tuesday evening. It is all about the 90 minutes in this game.

So, what about our line-up:

An injury to influential player Callum “Ainsley” Harriott could rule him out in which case a replacement is required. I would bring in Ben Stevenson and that would free Wiredu up to make forays further forward.

George

Welch-Hayes Eastman Smith Clampin

Chilvers Pell Sarpong-Wiredu Stevenson

Nouble Folivi

Subs:

Lapslie Senior Brown Doherty Gerken Cowan-Hall Sowunmi

Phil Brown has White and Halford at his disposal to add some spice to proceedings.
They earned a valuable point at Exeter with following line-up.

Oxley
Bwomono White Hobson Hart
Demetriou Ferguson
Walsh Holmes Hackett-Fairchild
Akinola

Halford was an unused substitute. Demetriou is an excitable player and one who, if there is a red card flourished, could well take the early bath.

Make no mistake a victory for the Super U’s is long overdue against Southend and I believe that we can prevail with a handsome 3-0 win.

The weather tomorrow in Colchester is going to be dry and bright with some cloud and 11 degrees C at kick off.

Forget about the poor performance at Roots Hall at Christmas time. Take the game to Southend, get at them early doors, and do not get involved in the niggly and subversive tactics from their players. We all know what is at stake and we understand the importance of three points. Only one team in Essex.

Enjoy the game.

I’d like to thank the Surrey Second XI for bowling their overs quick enough for a 18:00 finish and allowing me to get home a bare 30 seconds before kick off. The previous five days (including previous four day match) I didn’t leave the ground until near 19:00.

I’d then like to thank the clown on his mobile phone that whilst paying inadequate attention to the traffic jam shunted me up the rear end for doing it gently enough to cause no damage to my vehicle and allowing me to make it on time .

I’d then like to thank Essex County Council for not digging holes in the road permitting a smooth and comfortable journey back up the A12.

Given the pubs opening, the massive Essex win against Durham, the U’s winning on Saturday, and now winning 2-0 at HT, I think I have been compensated for a year of bad fortune in four days. Here’s hoping for 15 points in the Happy League........

Come on you U’s.

Scrappy, nervy, but Southend barely laid a glove on us, and rightfully look like they're heading to non-league.

Well done U's, now let's get one more point to make absolutely certain.

Hahaha absolutely brilliant!!

Fantastic from the U’s. Only the third time I’ve watched us this season, but a worthy £10 spent tonight. It’s a little difficult to see us lack identity with the style of football, especially when comparing us to last year. The long balls made me think that Norris would have thrived with that style of football. HOWEVER, now is not the time to be implementing a style or identity - it’s the time for whatever will get you points, and tonight Mullins and Tisdale had it spot on. Disciplined, strong, tough, physical. Pell put in a magnificent captain’s performance. Nouble doing exactly what was required. Saw the game out excellently (even PL teams can’t run down the clock by the corner flag as well as Pell and Harriott did between 83-86 mins)!

For all intents and purposes that’s job done and dusted in my eyes. A bad season remedied by two huge results against the teams who, where and when it counted most.

Nothing settled for certain due to the maths but Southend’s terrible goal difference and inability to score means they need snookers. My Orient mate tells me they are looking forward to applying the final nail at Roots Hall on Saturday.

Shocking challenge by Demetriou and John White may also be in trouble for an off the ball elbow on Pell which the referee missed.

Not felt so good since we beat Preston to miraculously stay up. But this time it was no miracle. Humes Out - Tisdale in please as DoF. Mullins to become permanent.

I have been saying for months, play only one of Brown, Senior, Poku and Harriott and go 4-4-2 or at least two forward. We can only afford one lazy showboating maverick. But to be fair, since Mullins took over, work rates have been higher and if they lose the ball by over by complicating the tricks, they will now all make some effort to defend. Exeter City were the first to undo us with a high press. Once that was sussed out others found us easy pickings. Mullins seems to have found a cure, increase player work rate, conspicuous in the last four fixtures.

The wheels also seemed to fall off coinciding with the Black Lives Matter controversies (which started with a few fans booing). Did Ball lose control of the dressing room? Was WB the right guy given his pedigree? We never seemed together thereafter. I recall us twice kicking off, whilst others took the knee and play had to be called back. Then we ceased taking the knee one week, then did so the next. Kicking out Racism is vitally important, but I wonder if the obvious politics of the BLM movement was undermining things? Mullins is clearly the correct man to unify the group. I hope that season 2021-22 starts with a truly unified diversity message rather than continuing with any devisive politically infused message that encourages anarchists to injure our brave police. Let's Kick Racism out, but in a more unified way than was encouraged by BLM anarchy.

Not entirely sure quite what the connection between the club making a stand against racism and the team’s performance on the pitch is, but I am keen to know what the obvious politics of the BLM are Noah? Politically branding civil rights movements to turn more moderate people away from supporting them is a common tactic of the far right, and sadly it works too. I was delighted to also learn yesterday that Derek Chauvin has been found guilty on all three counts of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter following the death of George Floyd.

Edit: obvious mistake corrected :-(

Assaulting police, causing criminal damage, disregarding covid laws, how many more misdemeanours do I need to highlight as regards BLM? Hopefully the rightful conviction will positively change things. But that is the result of the justice process, and not the result of lawless, violent anti-establishment protests. I abhor racism, fully support the kick out racism campaign, but BLM clearly divides opinion.

It seems evident that the dressing room repeatedly changed its mind as one week we took the knee, then we didn’t, then we did. One week Brown kicked off whilst others took the knee. If this is being debated with any frequency then it is bound to be a distraction if opinions differ, even there might be 100% support for the anti/racism campaign in general. Footballers need to be wholly focused on match day matters.

I don’t condone law breaking, but without it West and East Germany would still exist, the Catholics in Dublin would still be getting a beating from the black and tans, America would still be napalming children in Vietnam, the Black Shirts would still be marching down Cable Street, the Poll Tax would still be with us etc. etc.

Ending racism must be up there in any list of worthy causes, so why is it only OK for whites to break the law in pursuit of justice?

One mans freedom fighter is another man’s terrorist and all that.

Indeed, Nelson Mandela is a perfect example, and there are plenty more to choose from.

However, my question was actually what defines the BLM as a political organisation? As I said, demonising civil rights movements, or those that oppose state oppression in general as political (invariably left-leaning, e.g. Marxist, socialist, communist etc.) is a common ploy by the far-right throughout time. It's designed to take moderate conservative (small "c") support away from the movement and the cause they campaign for - the tried and tested "reds under your beds" scaremongering tactic.

Absolutely, still buzzing. I know you don't like the issue of racism being discussed on here Gerry, but when it comes up, it does have to be discussed I'm afraid.

However, back to the football - I actually thought the Walsall game was a better performance, but I'm putting that down to the quality of the opposition. Walsall at least tried to play the game, which clearly gave us the space to express ourselves, which we did extremely well. Southend offered little by way of threat, and were clearly intent on just trying to stop us from playing football through whatever dark arts at their disposal. They got what they deserved, nothing.

Technically, still two points from safety, or one point plus goal difference, but I think we've already been safe for a while, and when the dust settles on this season, 42 points and goal difference will have been shown to be the safety mark. Saturday will be interesting, because now we've got our mojo back, and can play without fear, I think we're good enough to get something at Cheltenham - just wish I could be there to see it first-hand.
