Spring is late....but the perennials have largely come up, or down again. No not in the garden, but club lawns of England, Fulham, WBA , Nodge , Watford, Rotherham, Northampton, Swindon and Grimsby are still going strong with promotion relegation every other season .

Some plants have barely survived for 101 years, lying largely dormant but have slowly suffered considerable blight in the recent past and this has culminated in them withering and dying out as a horticultural species.

It remains to be seen whether they will be able to be propagated under the cold frame that is Phil Orange Brown or whether their fate will be dictated by an emerging hybrid.

Their root system is weak and they are overrun by pests particularly the Chairman of the Society for lost species.

The answer lies in the soil (as someone once opined on the radio).
