Happy League 2020/21 Season round-up 23:25 - Jun 1 with 632 viewsmfb_cufc

Games being played behind closed doors One of the big debates last season was the effect of playing in empty stadiums. Has it made any difference?

29.5% of all games over the past 10 seasons have ended in an away win. During the 2020/21 season, however, this has risen to 32.7%. For the first time since it began, the English Premier League had more away wins than home wins. This has not happened in any other league though, so perhaps an anomaly.

What effect did it have on the Happy league? Perhaps some, but not a lot. As can be seen from the data below, that covers the seven seasons of my administration, there were more aways wins than most seasons. But they came mainly at the expense of draws, that were at a seven season low, rather than home wins. It was not influenced by what happened in the Premier League, as we only had 38 of the 300 games from that division, and they finished with 18 home wins, 12 away wins, and the other 8 ending in draws. The 2015/16 season is certainly a Happy League anomaly. Not sure why. I can only assume it was because a lot of away teams were favourites to win their games.

2014/15 Home wins 131 (43.67%) Away wins 94 (31.33%) Draws 75 (25.00%)
2015/16 Home wins 107 (35.66%) Away wins 119 (39.67%) Draws 74 (24.67%)
2016/17 Home wins 129 (43.00%) Away wins 91 (30.33%) Draws 80 (26.67%)
2017/18 Home wins 138 (46.00%) Away wins 88 (29.33%) Draws 74 (24.67%)
2018/19 Home wins 123 (41.00%) Away wins 94 (31.33%) Draws 83 (27.67%)
2019/20 Home wins 126 (42.00%) Away wins 97 (32.33%) Draws 77 (25.67%)
2020/21 Home wins 124 (41.33%) Away wins 105 (35.00%) Draws 71 (23.67%)

The Results There is no doubt about the top result this season, with the 1-0 getting 13 more than the nearest chalenger the 1-1. This was only the second time in my seven seasons this result has come out on top, and 42 is the highest season score for that result. On the other side of the cioin the 29 for the 1-1 was the worst season for that result. Usually predicting one score all games would never win you anything. It was an exception this season, because predicting every game to end 1-0 would have got you 206 points, and enough to win either league. The thing to stand out with the other results is the disappointing return on predicting games to end 0-2. I think it just goes to prove away teams are happy to hold on to what they have got when they score first. We have had a lot of experince of that with the U's home and away.

Mick thank you for that summary and guess the stats should not be used as a yardstick for next season regardless of whether stadium's are full or not
Finally thank you for running an excellent league giving something to look out for around 11pm on a Saturday night!
Hope everybody has a good safe summer The positive cases in my own small town here are higher at present than at anytime in the last 14 months which is a worry but thank goodness we have both had two vaccinations.

Mick outstanding statistical work as usual.

I echo Burnsie, I hope that everyone enjoys a splendid Summer and importantly stay safe.

Fixtures out soon and hopefully more transfer activity into the club.

The Happy League is in the safest of hands.

Up the U's

Great work Mick, and thanks for running a superb competition.

This data explains a lot. I won the title in 2018-19 and 2019-20 (and various others like Div One before that) by first picking results/scores on gut feel, then I would review and amend so that my overall selection profile mirrored past data (ratios of 1-0, home/away etc). Being data OCD it amused me for an hour each week as I could see a "system" (and it evidently worked). But the increased propensity in 2020-21 towards away wins screwed that.

I do hope clubs take note of this shift in result ratios caused by the absence of fans. The home crowd clearly do offer a "12th man". I think this might also have contributed to so many lack-lustre performances by the U's. Hearing fans expressi g bith positivity and disapproval clearly has an important role to play.
