Wayne Brown - Has he done enough to get the job permanently? 10:40 - May 12 with 979 viewsRSCOSWORTH

For me unless he was set a points target that he didn't achieve, seems unlikely, I can't see how the job won't be his should he want it.

When he took over from Mullins we were 22nd in the table with 22 points from 24 games and only Scunthorpe (19 from 25) and Oldham (18 from 24) were below us at the time. We’d lost seven of our last eight games in all competitions, the other being a 0-0 draw, and hadn’t won in the league for nearly two months. Brown was in charge for 22 league games and managed 33 points from those games. His record is as follows:

Manager Season Pos Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts PPG GFPG GAPG
Brown 2021-22 22 9 6 7 29 25 4 33 1.50 1.32 1.14

1.5 points per game put us 9th in the form table for the period that Brown was in charge for. Incidentally Mullins/Tisdale also managed 1.5 points per game from the eight games they were in charge for at the end of last season. 1.5 points per game over the course of a full season (69 points) is generally good enough for 8th or 9th in League Two but has snuck into the play off’s a few times. I think to get 33 points from the 22 games he was in charge, I think Sutton were the only side we didn’t play, was quite some achievement given the position and confidence of the team when he took over. Under Brown I think we’ve shown a lot more fighting spirit and gained points from losing positions eight times. We’ve also looked more dangerous going forward, goals per game up by over 66%, and defensively more solid. There have been disappointing performances, Stevenage, Northampton and Exeter especially, but there were some really good ones as well, Bradford and Salford for instance. A high percentage of this squad are contracted for next season and with a few additions and the confidence they can take from the end of this season I see no reason why we shouldn’t be competing in the top half of the table.

Our record since we’ve been back in League Two is as follows:

Manager Season Pos Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts PPG GFPG GAPG
McGreal 2016-17 8 46 19 12 15 67 57 10 69 1.50 1.46 1.24
McGreal 2017-18 13 46 16 14 16 53 52 1 62 1.35 1.15 1.13
McGreal 2018-19 8 46 20 10 16 65 53 12 70 1.52 1.41 1.15
McGreal 2019-20 6 37 15 13 9 52 37 15 58 1.57 1.41 1.00
Ball 2020-21 29 7 12 10 31 39 -8 33 1.14 1.07 1.34
Brown 2020-21 9 1 3 5 5 14 -9 6 0.67 0.56 1.56
Mullins/Tisdale 2020-21 8 3 3 2 8 8 0 12 1.50 1.00 1.00
Mullins 2021-22 24 5 7 12 19 35 -16 22 0.92 0.79 1.46
Brown 2021-22 22 9 6 7 29 25 4 33 1.50 1.32 1.14

Brown’s record is very similar to McGreal’s first season, which was good enough for 8th position, and obviously he’s still pretty inexperienced at this level so you’d like to think he’ll improve. For me Brown has done enough to be given the job permanently and hopefully next season we won’t have to look at the wrong end of the table for the first time in a while.

I am still not convinced WB is the answer but with the recent form guide I can understand why RC would appoint him.

Of course I would love WB to ram my concerns down my throat as that would mean we are doing well
