So what really did happen last night at Poorman Road 18:17 - Aug 10 with 1803 viewsdurham_exile

There appears to be confusion about who was responsible for the trouble inside Poorman Road last night. The following is RC's statement released on the official web site.

Following Tuesday night's game at Ipswich Town, Colchester United Owner and Chairman Robbie Cowling has issued the following statement:

"Last night was the first time that Colchester United have beaten Ipswich Town in a competitive game at Portman Road since we won there in 1951. That’s before even I was born and I’m ancient, so there won’t be many fans that witnessed both victories.

The management of the team included club legends Wayne Brown and Joe Dunne, and four players that have come through the ranks of our youth academy started the game, with a further two coming on as subs to help us see out the win.

Today should be a day when all Colchester United fans feel nothing but pride in their club.

Sadly, we are having to hang our head in shame today thanks to a group of fans in the Colchester United end that have embarrassed our club with their mindless violent behaviour.

It wasn’t enough for them to spoil the occasion for everyone else by being ultra-abusive.

They also sunk to a new low that I have not witnessed in my time at the club, whereby they destroyed some of the seating in the area Ipswich had allocated to our fans and threw the broken parts into the rows below them that were occupied by other Colchester United fans. These areas included families with very young children but that was of no concern for the mindless thugs that have shamed the club they claim to support.

A number of Colchester United fans had to receive treatment for the injuries they sustained from the broken chairs that rained down on them. Some whilst they cowered to protect their young children.

Although we were competing against Ipswich Town last night, I can assure everyone that the two clubs will be working closely together to identify those responsible to the police and to assist in any way we can to ensure they are punished in full for their unacceptable behaviour.

I wish to apologise to everyone that was subjected to this appalling behaviour, and also to our hosts Ipswich Town who were gracious in defeat but rightfully upset with the behaviour of fans in our allocated area.

We all hope that victories like last night’s historic win at Portman Road happen much more frequently than every seventy-one years, but I’m sure most Colchester United fans will never again want to be associated with last night’s appalling thugs.

Therefore, if you can do anything to help us identify those involved so that we can distance them from our club, please do so."

Robbie Cowling

Are we saying that no Ipswich supporters were to blame and that some Colchester fans through seats and debris onto those who were sitting below.

I can't believe it. Say it ain't so Joe.

The day after our first victory there since 1951 and we are having to deal with this shite.

Durham, that is exactly what happened. As I mentioned in another thread, it would have taken an Olympic discus thrower for either set of opposition to throw anything at each other, given the distance from Col U fans in the Cobbold and Ipswich fans in the home stand.

Robbie is 100% correct. Ipswich had no part to play in it. Also Col U fans acted disgustingly towards one of the Ipswich vloggers Alex Griffin, who had to be escorted into the ground by police in the end.

I got severely castigated by several members on this board when I reported what I regarded was extremely poor behaviour of U's "fans" at the last match of the season at Hartlepool.
Maybe we just have a small but hard-core hooligans in our midst and the sooner they are identified the better for all of us.

Wasn’t there last night so can only comment on what I’ve read but I’ve seen nothing whatsoever that implicates Ipswich fans in the trouble in the ground. There were a few comments about trouble outside as well but as to who instigated that I have no idea.

Unfortunately the club seems to have a small hardcore of complete arseholes whose only motivation is to be as offensive as possible, both verbally and physically. I really hope every single one of them receives a life ban and is also prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Given the away attendance was 50% of our usual home gate I would suggest there were some who were not our usual support
However it would have been easier to steward this number had they occupied the whole length of the lower tier (10 rows deep) rather than being crammed into a steep area 25 rows deep with stewards unable (unwilling ?) to go to the back.

I have been messaging a Col U fan who went to the game. I don't know him personally but he was going to send me a link to a video that he produced from the last Carabao Cup run we went on.

Anyway, I asked him if enjoyed the win and if he got it on film.

"I didn't because my battery dies round the time I got to the ground"

"I'd been using the camera to film our bus crawl trip to the stadium and wore it down!"

"But it was a horrible night. I'm still recovering from it actually. I'm considering whether I ever want to go to another football match again, and I've been going for 30 years!"

"Certainly a great result on the pitch, but it's just been hard to enjoy that in the context of everything else that was going on."

I replied about not being able to see anything that was going on via iFollow, but had read the Club Statement and read other reports etc and mentioned that I couldn't remember anything like that happening when we played them in the Championship!

He carried on:

"Me niether! This was something very different - it seemed pre-meditated and organised. Like a 1980s style organised firm. I think hooligans from other teams had been drafted in to boost the numbers. People were drugged up and intent on violence. I was attacked and pushed down a stairway, my dad narrowly avoided being smashed with a flying chair. Children had to be evacuated in tears...."

"There were open brawls with stewards, proper fist fights, smoke bombs, gang violence on the streets and at the station....."

"I could barely believe it"

"Awful chanting - it was like being at a Nazi rally or something."

"I've actually contacted ITFC to see if I can get CCTV of the attack on myself, and to apologise on behalf of everyone. They have been absolutely lovely about it, but I just wish I could do more to help"

"People often talk about 'the stupid minority'... but this was actually the majority. They really had numbers."

I mentioned that it sounded awful and that it seems to be putting off a lot of genuine Col U fans which is a shame as we need as many as we can get and also asked if he recognised anyone or if they were all day trippers out to cause trouble?

"The one who attacked me is quite known, and the interesting thing is that I haven't seen him for years."

"I think that says a lot".

"There were lots of faces that I didn't recognise really - not that I'm an expert, but still."

"On our minivan trip we had 9 OAPs, it was supposed to be a nice trip for them."

"They ended up having to cower in seats in the front row, just to stay safe."

"Not the evening we had hoped for!"

I then said that I wish that I could afford to pay for anyone caught up in the aweful scenario to go up to Stockport this weekend as I'm sure that they'll only be a few hundred diehards there supporting the team properly!

He then ends with:

"Yep I agree - I'd like to set up a fundraiser to repair the damage and for the kids and others who were injured and hurt. Don't really know how to go about it though."

"Plus I'm a little frightened of getting involved with any of this anymore..."

"I like to think I can handle myself, but I was scared just walking the streets after the match - don't think I've ever felt that before and I'm a 6 foot 3 guy!"

"I'm glad that at least a statement was made acknowledging the issues. Better than ignoring it completely I suppose."

I then suggest maybe putting up a proposal on Club United, but warned him that nothing ever seems to gain any traction. (just ask Wessex).

We then signed off.

So it must have been all the pensioners who are unable to travel to away matches further than 20 miles away. There we are then, culprits identified.

Very disturbing, and it accords with what I mentioned in the TUR blog - the CUFC Police twitter account after the match tweeted that a lot of the faces involved weren't familiar to them. You're right about the Club United thing too, but that's inconsequential compared to this.
