Super U's to get their league season up and running at the JCS 21:31 - Aug 16 with 2776 viewsdurham_exile

Tomorrow sees the Super U’s start their home league account to the MK Dons.

Tuesday night saw the U’s deservedly defeat Reading in the Carabao Cup and secure a lucrative Second Round Tie at home to Brentford.

DC would want the JCS to become a fortress and there is no reason why they cannot achieve the consistency of performance which has been lacking for the last four years.

Last Saturday we started like potential League winners and had it not been for the incompetence of the referee we would definitely have secured at least a point.

The injury to Ben Goodliffe was a shocker and once again the referee failed to take decisive, no, any action. Although he is likely to be available for the match squad, I would not risk him from the start but possibly offer him some valuable minutes from the bench but preferably give him another week until the Harrogate game to recover.

The damage to his teeth and the consequent bruising was serious. Worse still he was definitely on for a hattrick after two superb headed goals in the first 9 minutes.

Ignore the Carabao cup games, I’m sure that the MK Dons would want to forget the mauling they received at Watford and they will be fighting for league points. They played the Bantams in the league last week and lost 2-1, no disgrace because Bradford are a sleeping giant and perhaps this season is their opportunity to achieve promotion.

Mike Williamson is under pressure and has some injury doubts of his own to worry about. Most disappointing of all is probably that sustained by Nico Lawrence who has a knee injury and will be out for 8 weeks. Lawrence impressed at Colchester last season but suffered a shoulder injury which considerably limited his playing time. Alex Gilbey will be playing though against his former team.

Now I liked the way that Colchester played on Saturday and Tuesday night. Plenty of positivity and creativity, I predict a 3-1 victory for the Super U’s, but who will be starting for DC’s team.

Penalty hero Matt Macey will be between the sticks and the back four will likely be Hunt, Kells, Flanagan and Iandolo with a midfield of Read, Bishop and Payne. Hopper, Tovide and Edwards will start up front.

Therefore, as follows:

Macey

Hunt Kells Flanagan Iandolo

Read Bishop Payne

Hopper Tovide Edwards

Subs Smith, Terry, Gordon, Egbo, Greenidge, Ihionvien, Woodyard

The calf injury sustained by Lyle Taylor appears to be keeping him out. When I wonder will he make his league debut.

DC would like to strengthen his squad still further, a striker and another midfielder perhaps.

Still a home league win would be most welcome and will give the team more confidence as they aim to establish themselves in the top seven.

Expect a decent crowd about 4,000.

Remember the A12 is closed this weekend.

Enjoy the game.

Good post. I'd like to see Woodyard start, as he was excellent on Tuesday.

I agree with you and he will start if Read is not fit.

In fairness DC is still working out his best midfield.

Started slow, gifting too much possession in the first 20 minutes or so, but definitely got back into it after that, without really caring out any chances to speak of. Big second half coming up.

Fantastic result against a very good side - they'll still be up there at the end, though they do look a bit toothless at the moment. What gems we have in Read and Payne!

Great result today, if we keep playing like that we should be solidly in the top half maybe even the playoffs perhaps?

I wonder how many matches Mike Williamson has left. The debacle in last season's play-off semi-final has been followed by a shocking start to this season. Add to that new Kuwaiti owners and I fear his time will run out unless he can turn things around in the next couple of matches.

Excellent result for The U's today; well done!

Workmanlike performance and needed to concentrate throughout against a neat and tidy side. Payne the standout and deserved his goal to give us a much needed first home league win.
Good solid game for all , team effort for those who replaced others.
Now need a follow up win to keep a winning habit at home, which is most vital in gaining momentum.

2-0 we will take that everyday of the week.

MK Dons didn’t really like they have much once it got last midfield.

Still confused as to why Bradley doesn’t get more game time. Hopper for me doesn’t really bring a lot. He is slow lacks energy and doesn’t even win that many aerial battles.

DC will be very happy with the clean sheet. Macey made one particularly vital stop in the second half. Agree that Payne was excellent - he showed skill and also energy and was chasing the ball to the end. He thoroughly deserved his goal.

Just watched the brief highlights on Sky.

Two good goals

Disappointing to see Arthur Read failing to celebrate his goal.

Read can help fire us to League One and so get with the programme Arthur and knuckle down.

DC can get his charges promoted this season.

Ok we're three games into the season including one Carabao Cup game.

I wrote before the Wimbledon game that I was really optimistic about this season and of course with 44 league games to play it is very early days but we are looking strong and playing some adventurous positive football.

We will know even more after a couple more games but the squad assembled by DC looks capable of a top seven finish.

I also said that Wimbledon got lucky last week and they did, a defeat at Bromley today has brought them down to earth.

Time to get behind the team as they search for a third successive won against the Sulpherites next Saturday.

A good time to support the U's.
