A rare Wednesday night game (anyone know the last time?) sees Colchester United travel the approx 100 miles to Wimble.... sorry MK Dons for their 37th match in the 46 game season in League 2!
36 matches gone so far and The U's sit in 11th with 14 wins, 11 draws and 11 loses with 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 loses coming in the last 6 matches that explains why midtable seems about right for how this season has played out.
However, with 10 matches remaining and so 30 points still to play for Col U can theoretically go from 53pts currently to 83pts which would have had them finishing 2nd and 1pt behind last seasons League 2 winners Doncaster Rovers!
More realistically though, it looks like we are in a 7?!? horse race for 7th and the final Play-off place:
Last season the team that finished 7th was Chesterfield on 70pts, so if that is the target then Col U need 17 from the remaining 30 available.
Remaining fixtures: Wed 18 Mar (A) MK Dons (3) Sat 21 Mar (A) Bromley (0) Sat 28 Mar (H) Walsall (3) Fri 3 Apr (H) Oldham (1) Mon 6 Apr (A) Tranmere (1) Fri 10 Apr (H) Swindon (1) Tue 14 Apr (H) Accrington (0) Sat 18 Apr (A) Harrogate (3) Sat 25 Apr (H) Notts C (3) Sat 2 May (A) Cheltenham (3)
Not sure we could have hand picked a worse set of last 10 fixtures to play. However, in the corresponding fixtures this season we picked up 18pts, so a repeat of that and we might just sneak in?!?
So, if we are going to mirror previous results, we would need to pick up a win away to MK Dons on Wednesday! This is an MK Dons team that are enjoying their longest ever unbeaten run on home soil in the Football League (13 games – W9 D4), averaging two goals per game. However, both of Colchester United’s away wins over MK Dons in the Football League have come in their last three trips, securing 1-0 victories in both December 2018 and March 2025. Also, MK Dons have lost five of their last seven Football League meetings with Colchester United (W2), after only losing three of their first 18 encounters beforehand (all stats provided by the BBC so I hold no responsibility for accuracy )
Several football players have represented both Colchester United and MK Dons during their careers, including Tommy Smith, Jack Payne, and Jack Tucker. However, it is former Gilberd School attendee Alex Gilbey that is still playing his trade for MK. Now 31, Gilbey played for Frinton & Walton Youth, before joining and progressing through the Academy at Colchester United, where he was youth team captain. He embarked on his two-year scholarship with the club in 2011 and signed his first professional contract only one year into his scholarship, penning a 2+1⁄2-year deal in February 2012. Going on to make 110 league appearances and scoring 7 league goals, Gilbey left Col U to join newly promoted Championship side Wigan Athletic on 21 June 2016 for an undisclosed fee, signing a three-year contract. He then joined MK Dons in Aug 2017, Charlton in Aug 2020, loaned to Stevenage in 2022 and then re-signed with MK in May 2023. Following the retirement of long-serving teammate Dean Lewington, Gilbey was made club captain ahead of the 2025–26 season. (cheers Wikipedia).
And so on to the predicted line up for this one. In the reverse fixture Col U lined up:
We could potentially line up the same way. However, is it a game too soon for Iandolo and Edwards to start? We also have a tough away game at top of the table (currently) Bromley to think about and the injury to Araujo. So, for me we start the same team as the home game vs Crawley:
MK to be KO'd by The U's on 15:23 - Mar 18 by Witham
Is the match on sky today and can I watch via Now ?
Pretty sure it's actually the Sky Sports featured game tonight, so presumably you can buy a Now pass for the match?
Incidentally ghughes, in answer to your question - Wednesday games definitely aren't common, but this will be the second for Danny, the other was a League Cup game at home against Brentford in late August 2024. Wednesday games often feature when they coincide with either Boxing Day or New Years Day, but the last regular league fixture was under Hayden Mullins (2nd spell) in December 2021 at Valley Parade.

cheers Wessex - you have more knowledge than both Google and Co-pilot!
Beyond The Barside | Episode 43: Milton Keynes (A)
Aaron, Si and Dave reflect on the disappointing draw at home to Crawley Town — where it went wrong, whether the U’s did enough to win the game, and what it means for the playoff push.
Attention then turns to the midweek trip to Milton Keynes. Can the U’s strike lightning again and take points from one of the league’s top sides?
Line-up for tonight - not sure how it'll be reflected in formation, but Frankie Terry and Finlay come in, Jack Payne and Teddy replaced. Jack is on the bench, Teddy not even featuring (rested?).

beat me to it Wessex!
Enjoy the match everyone - I am off to work now but aiming to watch the full match replay tonight via iFollow.
Five across the back, but a FREE , looping header off the bar creates the goal . Just like the other night subs were ineffective. Side is crying out for a ball holding, goal scoring centre forward. Hosts sat back and comfortably defended the lead in the second period despite our possession. Interesting stat on Sky, was that we have been woeful in set pieces throughout the season, just a return of two from corners .
