I think it's only fair to point out that my rabid hate of Scummers (as I believe Pompey fans call them) stems largely from the fact I was sitting on the park and ride bus, two seats behind the window that got a brick thrown through it, when we played at their soulless stadium in the Cup, in (I think) 2004.

If these cheating scumbags are allowed to play in the play-off final, I don’t see the point in having rules anymore. The fair thing would be to let Hull through by default, but they won’t want to lose millions of gate receipts, so that won’t happen.

Today’s the day of the spygate hearing.
You get thrown out of a competition if you are a little club and you make a minor administrative error, like not registering a player on time, so let’s see what happens when you blatantly cheat and stick two fingers up at recently introduced rules to stop spying (probably not for the first time).
The EFL have no power to deduct points in the Premiershite and any fine less than £100M would still mean the cheats would prosper. There is only one solution where, just for once, right will prevail over wrong.

Not just kicked out of the play-offs, but a four point deduction for next season might cost them those play-offs as well. There is an appeal hearing today, but it’s difficult to imagine quite what theirs will be. They’ve admitted the offence and wouldn’t have done it if they didn’t think it would give them a material advantage - case dismissed. I suppose spying on free kick routines could offer an advantage or even reviewing line ups being trialled during practice, but with 100% of matches available on-line maybe little else. Player weaknesses (no left foot, always dribbles in one direction etc) are easily ascertained from regular TV match video. However, any unfair advantage should be punished and my view is Southampton have been justly penalised.
In cricket, every first class ball delivered is now analysed and AI is now taking a crucial role. “Match-Ups” enable captains to determine which bowlers should be employed against which batters and when. Batters are identified as vulnerable to particular line and length etc. Batters are inconsistent as regards shot selection. “Wagon Wheels” assist with field placing. Frankly, Counties don’t need to spy as this data is centrally collated within ECB/England development programmes.
Scorers in the highest quality recreational cricket use exactly the same software as in FCC. Top Premier League clubs (such as Colchester & East Essex) employ video capture, and to some lesser extent opposition player analysis is employed. A detailed Analysts suite of software can lay another level of sophistication upon this, but the software licence costs running into £000’s are generally prohibitive below FCC. Every morsel of data is used within FCC to extract potential advantage, find the most reliable players etc.
Costs of data analysis mean that in recreational cricket there is greater emphasis on traditional visual observations rather than AI captured and analysed motion. But video does now provides important support. I also know my local footage is used by Essex CCC to review up and coming players, which might explain why CEECC has recently produced so many that have secured County contracts.
As a level S1 (FCC) accredited Scorer I have witnessed these processes in action and I suspect few spectators have any inkling of the depth of data captured by Analysts. It’s mind boggling. If Soccer is anywhere as sophisticated (as I suspect it might be), then Southampton’s punishment is wholly justified. The difference being cricket puts this data in the wider domain encouraging player improvement rather than mere exploitation of player weakness. |  | | |

Many people seem to think the punishment is too harsh, but realistically it is the only option available. A massive fine or the Prem imposing a big points deduction next year means that the Premiershite would effectively have only 19 competitive teams next season. The money men or TV companies won’t be happy with that and why should cheats have fun in the bigtime. It’s tough on the fans, but that’s the way it is.
It’s impossible to say if they gained an advantage, but that’s not the point. Just don’t cheat, it’s that simple. Someone robs your house, it doesn’t make it OK if they didn’t get anything of value.
Now the Prem/EFL/FIFA need to stop goalkeepers deciding when a team takes a timeout, need to hit clubs that have 115 financial irregularities, need to ban diving cheats, needs to stop wrestling at set pieces and all the other things that are wrong in the game.

A staggering statement yesterday from this horrible club. Full of inaccuracies and a total failure to take ownership of a situation entirely of their own making. The rot clearly extends much deeper than the manager.
Despite systematic intentional rule breaking throughout the season, with the sole aim of cheating their way to a £200M prize, they clearly believe they are the victims. They still believe that they should be allowed to have no respect for the sport, the EFL or the other clubs in the Championship and then carry on as if nothing has happened.
Their players are now looking to take legal action against the club, their fans rightly want compensation, whoever loses the play off final will have a strong case against them for the disruption to their preparation, especially in light of the ridiculous appeal. They knocked Arsenal out of the cup, god help them if the Gooners find any evidence that they spied on them.
What a mess and a terrible shame for the genuine long-term fans who have invested so much time in the club.
I’m very pleased that it’s a rare victory for decency, but the collateral damage caused by these cheats is enormous. | | | |

Whilst I am saddened by the suffering of decent fans, I have heard rumours that the Stains (sic) (now known as the Sinners) will be putting on alternative entertainment on Saturday.
All the fans that thought the whole thing was funny, the ones that took the piss, the ones that pelted the Smoggies bus with missiles and especially the ones that through bricks at Col U kiddies, they will have something to do whilst honest teams are enjoying their day at Wembley.

If the manager was involved and it’s very difficult to see how he wasn’t, then I believe he won three managers of the month awards in his short time in charge. It’s like drugs cheats, you can take away the gold medal, but you cannot take away the jubilation of receiving it and you can never truly compensate the person that should have won it.
It would be nice if the club stopped playing the victim and laid all the facts on the table. Ultimately they would have more chance of salvaging some reputation. [Post edited 21 May 12:47]

And that is the fundamental question which remains unanswered. Part of their appeal was that they claimed what they learned had no impact on the outcome of the game - so why did they do it in the first place?
That claim may be true, but knowing they were cheating, they must have believed it could haven given them an unfair advantage, else why risk it.
I welcome the FA's announcement that they are now going to start investigating the individuals involved. I doubt anyone believes the incompetent patsy who was caught was operating on his own initiative. | |
