| Sacked Managers 20:55 - May 26 with 2248 views | ghughes11 | On 4 June 2025, Carrick was sacked by Middlesbrough following a tenth-placed finish in the Championship, and now on 22 May 2026, it was announced that Carrick had signed a new contract to continue as Man United's head coach (in the Premier LEague) through to 2028: https://www.bbc.com/sport/foot With the above in mind, it got me thinking, has there ever been a Col U manager that has been sacked by The U's that has actually gone on to manage a team higher up in the pyramid? Ben Garner (Southampton) and Hayden Mullins (Fulham) are at clubs that our higher up the leagues. However, they are not the Manager(s). Geraint Williams went to Leyton Orient in the same league as us. Managers that left us to go higher were not sacked e.g. B*rley, L*mbert, Boothroyd, Bl**mfield, Parky. Any of you "older" folks got any suggestions for Col U managers that "got away"? [Post edited 26 May 20:56]

oooh interesting! Why was he sacked when top of the league? "Interference" in the board(bed)room like Big Roy maybe?

| Sacked Managers on 07:27 - May 27 with 2165 views | quocol | it related to the fact that Mike Walkers son was playing for the u21's and MW did not encourage him to sign a contract and of course he went on to play for Spurs I think... | | | |

That was almost certainly the cherry on the cake, but Mike had multiple 'frank exchanges of opinion' with then chairman Jonathan Crisp - and let's face it, who wouldn't. Crisp originally tried to claim Walker had resigned to deflect blame, which was immediately refuted by Mike. Two days after being sacked, he won the Manager of the Month award.

Then Big Roy took over... Atkins later on took Northampton from near the bottom of the 4th flight in 1995 to the 3rd flight play offs in 1998 (and then down again)

I wonder what would have happened if Mr Crisp wasn't such an idiot towards Mike Walker and his son Ian signed pro terms with us? Promotion & a large transfer fee received instead of down to the 5th flight I reckon...
