The U'sual World Cup thread 22:34 - Jun 13 with 3767 viewswessex_exile

A little late, but I Just watched Qatar crawl to a 1-1 draw against the Swiss. I swear I was having severe flashbacks to a wet Tuesday night at the JobServe Community Stadium. Qatar’s tactical masterclass today was basically copy-pasted from our 2023 relegation scrap.

They largely played five at the back. They passed sideways for 80 minutes. They looked terrified of the football. Honestly, if you put them in blue and white stripes, you could easily convince me it was us playing Forest Green away (not that one!).

Their equaliser was pure Colchester Jamie McDonnell heritage. A sublime cross. A defensive scramble, and a bullet header that left the keeper no chance. It lacked only one thing. It needed the satisfying sound of 2,000 freezing Essex fans shouting "how on earth did we get that?!"

Well done Qatar, now sort out your record on human rights!

Breaks 20 mins in, non covering of the mouth, refs call up for wrong bookings and VAR at corner kicks …. It’s not what we know it .

Even with VAR, they still got Switzerland’s “goal” wrong. Congrats also to Scotland on finally getting a World Cup victory, against the mighty Haiti - that might just get them through the group stage.

Germany against Curacao, and I have a vested interest here. Not just because it's the Hermans, but in a winner takes all work sweepstake, I drew the 2500-1 outsiders.

Commiserations Curacao, a valiant effort, but Germany nicked it 7-1.

I take it there are no former U's at the World Cup despite the involvement of pretty much every country that has ever even seen a football?

Cape Verde, loved the place. Didn't know they had enough fellas on the island to make a football team let alone draw 0-0 with Spain. Good on 'em!

Delighted for them, fingers crossed NZ can go further and add to that windfall. I was briefly enervated by Senegal's goal, but no one can deny Mbappe's quality to finish the match.

Enervated.

Surely the best word of the week we’ve enjoyed for decades. I shall use it daily until July 19th.

Slightly nervy at times, but first hurdle for England safely negotiated, and with quite an enjoyable performance too. Ghana next on Tuesday evening.

Well the sweeper has gone out of fashion, nobody plays with one now.. Great pictures of Japanese clearing up there litter after game !
Was that JT in the plush seats ? Soon got over the consortium disappointment.
Oh, and England, needed the kick up the proverbial at HT against an allying Croatia side.
Better sides will punish you if you give possession away cheaply, but look better going forward than sitting on it.

Good result for Iran tonight, and to be honest, well-deserved. There'll be tomato sauce on the walls of the White House tonight.

Possibly mixing multiple threads, but after the performance of the Canadian keeper, Goodman to get a start next round?

didn't start, but Owen Goodman's Canada make it into the Round of 16 after beating South Africa (no Bongani Khumalo to be seen) 1-0!

Thought it was bad enough for me getting up at 4am NZT to watch that rubbish!

Don't envy any of you lot staying up for a 1am kick off on Monday to watch Mexico have a fiesta of football against a luckluster England

Hands up if you are thinking of staying up

Yeah, probably will - either stay up or get up - not sure which yet. Harry came good in the end, but if we don't significantly improve on yesterday's performance, we'll be coming home.

So for those listening to the BBC commentary of Egypt Australia you will have heard the suggestion that FIFA were thinking about bringing the kickoff forward to 7pm Sunday UK time because of anticipated storms. Great news for the UK audience, much less so for the team. Latest I can find, looks like FIFA are going to row back on this idea and leave things as they are. We shall see…
