Here we go then, Col U’s 2026-27 League Two campaign begins with a long trip to the north-west of the country to Accrington Stanley. This will be our 11th consecutive season in League Two, the longest time we’ve ever been without a promotion or relegation I believe, and as it stands I don’t think we have the quality or depth of players to challenge for promotion this season but I’m sure everyone thought the same about Bromley last season.
With it being the first league game of the season it’s tricky to predict the starting XI but going off the team Danny picked to play against Southampton last weekend I’m expecting the U’s to lineup as follows:

Vincent-Young Tucker Raggett Iandolo
Digby Hunt
Thorn Anderson
Payne
Ihionvien
Subs
Lisbie, Oni, Terry, Chiwome, Kuffour Jr, Leake, Smith
I’m assuming that Bishop, Williams and Perry are all not ready to figure at this early stage of the season. I think the squad looks pretty good overall but I do feel we still need an experienced striker and another wide player. On their day our best XI is a match for anyone in this division but having those eleven players available week in, week out was a real struggle last season.
For some reason I feel like Accrington are a bit of a bogey team for us, especially away from home, but our last three trips have resulted in a defeat, a draw and a win which isn’t too bad of a return. Most people expect Accrington to get relegated each season but they seem to do enough to stay away from trouble (16th, 21st and 17th the last three seasons). Prior to that they spent five seasons in League One which is impressive for a club of their size. There should be a lot to like and admire about Accrington but I must confess that I’m really not a fan of theirs.
Don’t think there’s anyone in the current Accrington squad who’s appeared for Col U and Harry Pell is the only player who comes to mind that has played for both. Are there any others?
The weather at the Wham Stadium, Crown Road tomorrow is set to be sunny and warm at 20 degrees with a gentle breeze from the west-north-west. This may even feel cool for the U’s fans who have been experiencing 30+ degree temperatures over the last few months. Accrington lead the head to head between the two sides by six wins to two and we rarely start the season with a win so I’m going to go for a 1-1 draw with the goal coming from Payne.

At home and away we have an identical record of 1 win 1 draw and 3 defeats scored 4 and conceded 7. Making the overall record 2 wins 2 draws 6 defeats scored 8 conceded 14. Considering they are a team we are expected to do well against, that is not a good record.

Should've trusted my initial feeling! We got absolutely battered during that solitary away win too with Joe Taylor's goal stealing a win we definitely didn't deserve.
Let's hope Bishop is fit to play some minutes tomorrow although Accrington away is probably the kind of game where he'll be kicked into the stands!
On the played for both list, courtesy of Graeson's ColUData website, there are quite a few names that we'll all know: Tom Bender, Tom Dallison, Tariqe Fosu, Kurtis Guthrie, Matt Macey, Kayode Odejayi and Elliot Parish, plus a couple more as well. I'll be honest, I can't remember the context of when/ why for any of them.

I'm guessing 4-2-3-1 with Hunt in midfield alongside Bishop and KVY right back

That was a much improved second half. Once we got our foot on the ball, definitely the better footballing side, and a very welcome draw and two goals for the travelling Faithful at a very difficult place to visit.
