I admired the speach and stir he's actually created. Energy companies have been ripping us all off for far to long. He's right to raise and challenge although I'm not sure in such a draconian style. He's made a statement - fine just think it's too far. He could have made the same splash but just differently. I'm not sure his proposals work although it is right to challenge the energy firms.
But, this current labour regime:
1) I can't take Ed Miliband seriously. His voice is just a joke!
2) Ed Balls is one of the most dangerous men on the planet. A loon. That guy in charge of the exchequeor is frightening.

However the impact on the economy of disengaged-deciding-to-go-elsewhere-energy companies is considerable.
5% got wiped off their share-price yesterday - that's huge and I bet many of us are indirectly their shareholders through pension schemes, ISAs, etc without realising it.
It could also have a massive impact on outside investment in the UK.
Milliband is sending a signal of near-renationalisation. He even said in a post-conference interview that he'd like to renationaise the Post Office and the railways. A hard shift to 70s socialism and we are truly fcked. He's clearly clueless but whoever his advisors are - they need shooting.
And as for lowering the voting age to 16, words fail me... |  |

I don't understand how the government can control the cost of commodities such as gas and petrol which are priced on the international market.
Building new infrastructure would be a better idea since then they could store more gas when it is cheaper rather having to buy it at its most expensive in the winter.

I think its long overdue tbh. Energy prices are sky high and without any legitimate cause. Talk of 'upstream' investments in infrastructure are to a large degree, bullshit.These companies pay out hundreds of millions a year in dividends to shareholders while continuously blaming rising prices on rising energy costs. The UK public are getting fleeced in comparison to other Europeans.
I'm in no way a fan of Miliband, and I hope to god he doesn't end up as PM, but I think its about time someone stood up to these companies. |  | | |

This is a problem we already have under the present government, although the last government could've done a lot more to avoid it.
Using this argument against Labour's proposed energy price freeze overlooks the fact that Cameron has been unable to agree reach agreement with EDF over pricing for the proposed Hinckley C nuclear reactor. There is stalement. My dozy MP (a Conservative) glibly says that we "only" need to build 20 reactors to address climate change issues whilst ensuring a good supply of electricity. The small fly in the ointment is that the fastest a reactor has been built in the UK is seven years.

The UK has the CHEAPEST Gas prices in the whole of Europe. And is in the cheapest three countries for electricity.
You can fix your energy prices now for the next two or more years - so what Red Ed is saying means nothing.
He's simply going for the populist vote as he is desperate. There is huge investment required in our energy infrastructure - due to successive governments totally failing to invest over many years - which the energy industry is investing in and will continue to do so. This policy is a blunt response to the rises in fuel costs partly forced up by the push for expensive renewables. If we encouraged fracking the price of gas would collapse in the UK or we could build more storage facilities that could hold cheap summer fuel. These are long term solutions and not an election gimmick.
The saving to consumers is based on a presumption that prices will rise by a certain amount during the short period from the election to the start of 2017. It ignores any extra costs that may be front-loaded before then and any catch-up costs after 2017 probably negating any benefit. There's not much of a well to dry up mate in terms of energy prices.
Do you know how much profit British Gas/Centrica makes each year from it's energy customers? No - I bet you don't, so I'll tell you. It's around £4. That's all, £4 per customer, per year. Most of the profit Centrica makes is in it's upstream business (gas exploration etc.) and in the USA. Not from domestic energy customers. | | | |

If you cap their bonuses then the basic pay will rise.
Bonuses can be clawed back fairly easily when circumstances dictate. The basic wage packet can't.
Capping the bonuses therefore is a false economy, don't let the fact that it involves the panto villain bankers blind you to that. | |
