Remembering the 1982 FA Cup semi-final - History
at 19:18:19

Thanks for the memory jogging review. I was stood at the top of the North Bank and lost my voice from singing. Little did I know I'd be standing there again a few years later when we were in the UEFA Cup.

Thanks Clive for another season of brilliant posts. I think you have nailed it once again. We need stability and continuity and despite that awful hat I think Holloway has done enough to stay. And perhaps we may just be beginning to see the light after the past few years of excess and non investment.

Rampant Newcastle inflict record defeat on sorry QPR - Report
at 20:17:00

Great report Clive. I appreciate Newcastle's squad cost a packet but we also have many players who cost millions. We are not on the same scale but our team was hardly put together on a shoestring. Ducking embarrassing sums it up.

The importance of being Les — column
at 13:11:24

An excellent article Clive. I am always gobsmacked at our continuing inability to develop youth players but I was stunned by the stats you quote. I appreciate the previous 15 years have been a turbulent time in the club's history but the youth set up ought to be a golden thread - providing links into the community whilst giving the opportunity for kids to develop and challenge for the first team. (And, of course, saving us money in transfers.) It isn't rocket science and many other clubs seem to make it work. I hope it doesn't happen but it may take financial armageddon to reset the balance and culture of the club.

Newcastle away, cheap train details — travel
at 19:05:27

If travelling by car be wary where you leave the A1 as they are widening the carriageways around Newcastle. They've only just started and traffic is already snarling up. Parking at Heworth may be a good option. .

QPR lose unbeaten home record to promotion rivals — report
at 20:16:57

Great report Clive. I lost count of the missed shooting opportunities. At one stage Sky reported we had 84% possession in the previous 10 minutes. Didn't get us very far did it? This tiki taka bollocks is nice to watch at times butit doesn't win us games and is now boring the arse off me. Why Hoilett and Phillips seem allergic to bombing down a wing, skinning a defender and putting a cross in is beyond me. Ah well,at least Joey has got Christmas off.

Honest to God, plays — report
at 23:20:05

I chose Saturday as the first trip to Loftus Rd for my godson. Boy, was he excited. He whizzed round the club shop buying a shirt (and a gnome) and sat impatiently in the School End for an hour until kick off. And an hour for an eight year old is a lifetime! But after 20 minutes of dross he was counting the planes overhead. I joined him; it was far more enjoyable then what was being offered on the pitch.

Now I know you have to take the rough with the smooth. After all, we are second in the table despite the largely underwhelming displays. But if Little Tom Carroll is the best of the England U21s and even he can't deliver a decent corner then I'm afraid an 8 year old will find better things to do. Probably Grand Theft Auto. Still, my other half thought Tom was easy on the eye so at least LTC can console himself with the thought he is a Housewive's Favourite.

I wish I could say something more constructive. I just hope that we have a few more ideas when we play a suspension riddled Blackpool.

Does Mackie sale tally with QPR’s ‘right sort’ rhetoric?
at 13:00:54

Unless there is something we don't know this is a perplexing transfer. Whether you like Jamie Mackie as a footballer or not, you couldn't doubt his enthusiasm, his team spriritedness and his empathy with the fans. All this talk about getting the right sort of players is now revealed as just talk. Perhaps Mackie had had enough of the madhouse that is our club?

Good luck to Jamie, that goal against City was a wonder. Thanks for that and all the other memories.

Still just a potato — full match report

Clive, to you and everyone else at LFW Towers a heartfelt thanks for all the reports and tweets this season. Perhaps Harry finally blooding a youth player like Harriman is the one shaft of light we have had amongst the storm clouds. God knows, we could do with some good news. Let's hope sanity prevails during the Summer break, our squad gets a solid pre-season under their belt and we start making headlines for all the right reasons as we storm the Championshp. Well, we all have our dreams!

Bore draw relegates Royals and Rangers — full match report
at 12:20:45

Both teams deserve to go down. I thought I had run out of emotions this season but I have discovered a new one - weary indifference. A neutral observer wouldn't believe this was a must-win game. The lack of ideas we showed to break down Reading's defence, the misplaced passes, Rob Green deciding to select exactly the right blade of grass to take a kick from rather than banging the ball downfield as the seconds counted down to the final whistle, Bosingwa playing with the air of someone who has just enjoyed a lavish and long lunch, etc, etc.

I really don't know where we go from here. There are obviously some major cultural issues as well as a lack of talent and application for Tony and Harry to get a grip on. Normally you would draw a line and set fresh expectations but a raft of alleged top level players on immense contracts who won't want to shift may send that scenario flying out the window. This could take a few years to sort. Still, I haven't been to Donnie's new stadium yet.

QPR humbled by MK Dons cup massacre — full match report
at 12:49:44

I wasn't at the match, and when I heard Park and Ferdinand were in the team I decided to do something more worthwhile such as having an afternoon nap. It wasn't going to end well and I think the comments are right - it was Harry's way of loosening the pursestrings even further by showing just how lacking in depth we are. Thanks for the report though Colin. That couldn't have been a pleasure to write.

Ever since David Thompson we all know the club has lacked a realistic long-term strategy. Whilst we have made plenty of column inches we are paying for it on the playing field. As Clive and others have mentioned many time before we have few if any foundations - the club goes from one sticking plaster solution to another with a seeming total disregard for succession planning and coaching players through the ranks. We've got what we've got but hopefully with Tony's backing the new Academy will eventually bear fruit. But this will take a hell of a time. When Harry has spent what is left in Tony's wallet I hope we stay up but, if not, let's not descend into recriminations and panic measures. West Brom are held up as a role model and they yo-yoed between divisions for a few years. I hope we don't go down (God knows we waited long enough to go up) but if that is what we have to do to change the culture of the club then I have no problem swallowing that medicine. We may even start to enjoy our football again.

Redknapp’s Bosingwa blast brightens dark day on the Tyne — full match report
at 14:17:56

We were set up to take a point, we showed little ambition against a weakened team and the game was over as soon as they got a goal as we were never going to score in a month of Sundays. I can understand the 'draw away, win at home' approach but that will be of little cheer to the away support. I only had to get the Metro from Sunderland; I felt sorry for anyone who travelled up from London to watch a perfomance that matched the weather.

Great report as ever Clive. It was so noticeable the Mags identified Ferdinand as the weak link. I wonder why? Hey ho, onwards and upwards.

Berbatov thriving as Fulham adjust to Jol’s way — opposition profile
at 08:10:37

Be warned, I'm bringing my family down for our annual Christmas pilgrimage to Loftus Rd. The first time I did this we lost 5-1 to Boro. (After 10 minutes my wife thought Taraabt was a genius. By half-time she wanted to throttle him such was his unpredictability. i've had to tell her that not much has changed.) I am genuinely concerned we will get stuffed again tomorrow as Fulham look too organised for us and I will have to spend the rest of the weekend with a look of desperate self-pity on my face. But you never know!!

Redknapp’s impossible job begins with midweek trek north — full match preview
at 08:05:39

Great assessment Clive. A bit of local news, If the game goes ahead and you're travelling up by car, the A19/A1231 is closed due to flooding. This is the main route to the Stadium of Light. Hopefully it will reopen later (it's just stopped raining) but, if not, the alternative is to come off at the A690 and drive through the city. This is likely to get a but busy so if travelling up the A19 come off at the A1018 through Ryhope. This is the southern approach and it takes you straight to the centre of town. Have a safe journey.

Hung by his own players, Hughes now in untenable position — full match report
at 08:17:55

Saturday's was a car crash performance and I cannot argue with anything Clive has said. What makes it worse for me is the infantile posturing in the media from people like Ferdinand who trot out the same banal lines before a game and then spend 90 minutes lurching round a pitch like a camel in a drug induced haze.

I agree with the idea of TF speaking to Derry and Nelsen. I am not advocating player power but it is clear something is deeply wrong at the club - and whilst it may not be cured overnight it does look like we need to sluice the Augean stables. God knows I don't want more change but the management and players have brought this on themselves. We expect nothing at Old Trafford so why not try something new and drop some of particularly inept performers (Bosingwa and Ferdinand). And by drop I mean remove them from the squad for as long as necessary.

LFW Travel Guides - Sunderland, Stadium of Light
at 09:08:08

If you want to drink in a Wetherspoons in the city centre then the Lambton Worm is a little bit further to walk to the Stadium but a much better pub all round. I was in there when they postponed the Reading game back in August and there were a fair few of their fans in there.

PS. Even the Mackems were amazed a game could get called off due to bad weather in August. Mind, this is a place which had a game postponed in April due to a blizzard. The Stadium of Light is also the ground where I have been the coldest. Going back a few years when we remarkably drew 2-2 from 2-0 down it was so cold and wet I couldn't hold my pint as my hands were shaking so much. If you're coming bring your gloves. And scarf. And windcheater. Probably wellies as well.
